Another thing to consider is that Vizlet is the Matriarch, so she is a bit of a mother figure to all yinglets (as mentioned in Page #237), whether from her eggs or not.
While most yinglets don't really have authority over/responsibility towards their direct progeny, the Matriarch definitely does. And any yinglet is gonna be sad seeing another suffer or worse, I would imagine, given their highly cooperative and communal social structure. The realities of their situation might mean they have to get more practice than they'd like, when it comes to mourning and grieving and recovery, though...

You also have to ask, how much of the communal raising/impersonal care for their direct offspring is cultural, and how much is biological. I don't see why they couldn't still instinctively care about their young like most highly social species, even if their culture is a bit more communal and less individualistic in regards to child-rearing.
(Also, why am I not exactly suprised to see you commenting under this post? Haha.)

Possibly because the eggs are more like a reptile egg with a flexible shell but a more compact yolk; allows females to pass smaller eggs that stretch and get thinner as they do so in preparation for hatching when they're sufficiently developed? Not being the species originator I can only speculate, but I love speculative biology.
Yeah they're almost more like external wombs/placentas, in that they grow in size after they're laid.

aw nice! ^w^ I am curious (though I think I know the answer >w<') as to what would happen if the cloaca was blocked, would their bellies swell with the eggs, or would it end in a not so fun way? hopefully the former, but given the amount of detail and thought you've put into it, I'd imagine the latter being the more likely scenario ><'
I did kinda gloss over most of the details in Chapter 16 of "Modern Major Yinglet", since I didn't want to write out-and-out porn. But this is basically the size I was picturing Vayryn being. Big enough that her boyfriend commented about her looking a bit bloated, but small enough that she was still trying to be in denial about it (as a former human). She did not appreciate having to have a vet clinic do the ultrasound, but maybe if she hadn't sassed off and out of embarrassment towards the hospital tech, that wouldn't have happened. (Actually, it probably would've, because said tech wouldn't have thought about how you have to shave the fur to get a clear image.) ^_^
Well, in Page #61, Beizel did point out that there was a free spot in her breeding schedule soon... Also, seems pretty clear that Pekkit is a Beizel/Vizlet kid, so it wouldn't be the first time.
Hardly unusual for the Matriarch to have a full breeding schedule, given her status. You want to pair the best with the best, and she wouldn't be Matriarch if she wasn't one of the best, right? ^_~

We have context and lore about the Yinglet births, but we haven't seen a gestation or laying of eggs. At best, the mating season is used as a bargaining chip for political favors between Patriarchs. And most importantly, the golden moment: when will Kass's time come to fulfill her biological role for the species?
