The Snowpards were not shy let alone strangers with firearms. Most of the male members has a history serving with the Military, USFS (Forest Service) and the FWS (Fish and Wildlife Service), so it's common they will taught their family members how to handle firearms. In the case of Wilford and Joanna, their dad owned quite a collection of firearms handed down from his family, and taught his kids how to shoot at The Nearby Range owned by Vernon's old colleague (he really named it such) or during open season go hunting in Sleepy Creek. As for Jo herself, the first gun she ever owned was a S&W SW9 handed down from her Father during his stint with the FWS.
