For someone who has never watched Star Trek, this uniform is spot on!
Starfleet loves to change the uniform frequently (and can do so without waste thanks to matter replicators), but this is a late 2360s-early 2370s science/medical uniform. Since the activities are not medical related and the tricorder doesn't have the handheld scanner, then ResistantLake's character must be a science officer.
This exact uniform was worn on Deep Space 9 (Jadzia Dax, Ezri Dax, and Julian Bashir) and Voyager (The Emergency Medical Hologram known as the Doctor).

Also, looks like a Caitian! Star Trek actually has an anthro cat species that was added in the 1970s (at least a couple people on Star Trek are furries lol. They even added an Easter egg on a background screen with Admital Erma Felna). The good thing is, this species has a lot of diversity, so there are both digitigrade and plantigrade ones, some have hair in addition to fur, others don't, and some have 4 fingers while others have 5.
My Caitian character is also a science officer, but from later in the timeline. He is digitigrade and has 5 fingers to make it easier to cosplay in the future, and he has curly brown hair. If you so wish, art of him is on my profile.

There is an amazing resource called the Ultimate Chronological Star Trek Viewing Guide, which, like the name suggests, orders the episodes and series into roughly chronological order (there is some wibley-wobley timey-wimey... stuff). I imagine it would be amazing to watch it like this, with you being able to watch the progression of time, society, and technology!

I made a prologue for it using clips from one of the movies! It is designed to foreshadow what is to come, and depicts the event that launched Earth onto the galactic stage, the flight of Zephram Cochrane's ship the Phoenix, the first human-made warp-capable ship.
