Firstly, I'm sure someone probably assumed this was something adoptable related since 1) I do support people making adoptables, and 2) my rant on the anti-adoptable crowd. But, no nothing adoptable related.
They're just tail designs. But tails that I wanna actually sew and possibly sell. Except that first one. That one's one I'm gonna be making once I get back home to go with these pretty cat ears I bought at Acen. The rest are mixes of colors I already have and colors I plan on buying. I don't want to buy too much right off the bat, hence why the similarity in colors for a lot of these.
Really I posted this to pose a question. Because I would like to get your opinions on a few things. See, wanna expand from just doing illustrations and drawing work to the cosplay/cosplay prop/accessory deal. And it's something I've been thinking about since I came back from Acen this year. There's so many dealers that sell animal tails and ears but they're always...really boring. Everyone always sells either fox or cat tails. Everyone sells solid or two toned colors. No one really makes anything really eye catching when it comes to tails. So let's say that you're walking down the dealers room of some anime or furry con. Would any of these designs make you stop and look more? Not necessarily buy them persay, but just...would they be eye catching? Or do people actually prefer the solid or two toned colors for generic tails? Or if these are interesting, which designs/color combos work?
Only tail on here I don't like is #8. It's so close to being something interesting but...eh, design failed but I didn't know how to fix it so I left it. All the other ones are pretty decent to me. Threw a pink and blue one in there 'cause I was gonna buy those colors anyways for a Biyomon cosplay. XD
If people do comment, I do want decent feedback. Generally I'm fine with the "cool" or other one word comments, but I do want opinions here and it won't really do any good if I get nothing back. I'll leave this in the gallery for about a week. After that I'll just move it to scraps.

They are very awesome designs, but i dont' know about how well they'd sell. I think the reason so many folks make generic tails is because there are far more people that have fursonas that look roughly like those.. I'm having similar issues with plushes. I made some cool ones with printed fleece but the simple ones are what are selling first.
That's what I figure...The simplest one up here is the last one which is just black and green.
I guess it's just me that doesn't see the appeal in a generic tail. If it's a white tail, it'd be cheaper to just make your own. One or two toned tails are so simple to make. I just wanna find a way that if I were to sell some stuff at a con I'd easily stand out of a crowd. When stand a, b, and c over there are all selling the same color tails, only way to stand out is to do something different. *shrug*

*nod* true.. you'd be surprised how simple a thing is bought at some cons though. I mean... look at pawstar's stuff and they sell 'em by the scores! their tails are STICK tails too, lol. some people just don't know how to process making something 3-dimensional, and some others just absolutely SUCK at handstitching, and buying a sewing machine to make a tail is a bit. exorbitant.
Hadn't seen Pawstar's stuff before so I had to look it up. While the husky tail looked okay, their feline and fox tails were very...tubular. ^^;
Anything I sew, i have no choice but to sew it by hand. Well if it's fur anyways. Only sewing machine I have is my mom's old one which cannot handle thicker fabrics well. ^^;

That's the sort of feeling I was hoping for. And generally what I feel it boils down to anyways. At least when I'm buying stuff at a convention, I know I don't need this piece of art or this object. I could probably make it myself or something similar to it. But it's cool/cute/whatever, so I buy it anyways.
It'd technically have no need for any of these, but aside from 1 (which I'm making anyways), I'm so tempted to make 2 'cause that my favorite one up there. ^^;

Generally it's more in the anime fandom that cat ears and tails do well (with all the cat girls and what not). Felines are pretty popular with furries too, just not as much as foxes or wolves or huskies. Which I'd actually plan to make designs for all three of those as well. Though probably not stereotypical "red fox" or "black and white husky" or whatever.
While I'd love to do commissions for these things, I just don't think that option's very feasible to me right now. Mostly due to the cost of fur. Reason I designed most of these with similar colors was to limit the amount I'd have to buy (as some of those colors I already have, but some I still have to get). At the moment, I've gotta be a bit cost effective...

Tails like that would certainly be eye-catching, and they would definitely sell well even if people don't have any characters to match them. There was a dealers table at AC this year that had colored tails with a black outline and a white underside, and they ALL sold within the first two days.
However, if you do decide to open for custom tail commissions, I would love to be put on some sort of waiting list for that. Especially if you're able to create tails with as much detail as the ones in this submission. ;~;

Really? That's the kind of thing I'd be hoping for. If it catches their eye and they don't have the money to buy something, they can pick up a card and hopefully it'll be eye catching enough to remember. And if they do want to buy something, that'd be awesome. x3
I'd really love to open for custom tails in the future. And honestly I hope I can sew things with this detail. ^^; Once I get back home from this internship, I'm gonna test it out with #1 and 2. ^^; XD

I'd say these would certainly be eye catching, however, I would suggest not making these for your only stock at a con. Maybe make one or 2 for display, to show your skills and attract attention, certainly. However, they would be a LOT of work, therefore equaling a higher cost, which most people probably wouldn't shell out for a tail that wasn't custom made, especially at a con. Usually one to 2 colored tails go quickly, because they tend to be cheaper, and more likely to match someone's fursona. Or, designs that are obviously certain well known breeds/species/etc.
These MIGHT be a little more appealing at an anime con, where people want brightly colored, exciting costumes, but aren't necessarily furries, although again, you'd hit the price problem.
The ones you'd probably have the easiest time selling would be the african wild dog-ish one, and various colors+black tiger tails, if you were going to stick with these designs. :) And, because I don't want to be a total downer, I do LOVE these designs. They're all very exciting and original, and I particularly love the yellow/black/white one in the middle. I do hope you make a few of these, as they will all look AWESOME! <3

Heh, anime peeps would be part my demographic...but wouldn't know where to get their imput on it as otakus are kinda...scattered. And a good amount of them run and scream at the sight of anything that looks "furry" unless you actually see them in person where they're just eating up all the ears and tails the dealers den has to offer. I was probably thinking more along the line of otakus anyways probably 'cause I've been going to anime cons longer than furry ones.
Really the only ones on here I'd make for fun are 1 and 2. #1 I was gonna make anyways. #2 I just wanna make cause it looks cool. XD And I'm a sucker for lime green. ^^; I'll take Beetlecat's advice with this and work with ones that look like generic animals and either mix and match colors or whatever. Luckily those designs are the better ones on here anyways. And I might modify #7 a bit and change colors for #5 'cause I think those might work with more "natural" colors.

1, 6, and 9 are by far the most sellable of the all the designs. The 2nd and last would be sellable if they were natural colours.
People who like sparkledog stuff are usually very very particular about the exact sparkledogging. Gettting a match on design AND colours to a random person walking by is way more random then matching a natural hue stripy tail to a person who likes cats.
If you're talking display to draw people in but not sell, then any of them would work. They're all plenty complicated enough.
if you're talking selling, then stick with simple designs and solid colours. That's what people buy. People can commission more complicated designs to suit their own tastes, but just off the street they're not going to buy a random complicated design since it 1) is unlikely to match what they want and 2) will be more expensive.

True...
I figured that I could switch up colors anyways with each of the patterns. I was sort of thinking about that as I was playing around with colors. And while I personally prefer the colors on the 2nd one here (and will probably make it for myself), changing up those colors won't be much of a difficult task.
Then, complex stuff for display, simple stuff for displaying and selling. Okay. Thanks for the tips! <3

These are all really gorgeous designs. Jut a thought though, as I've dealt before and sold tails:
People like generic stuff basically. It sells quicker, even though its well..bland.
These tails are eye catching, but with the designs and all the time needed to make something of that caliber, I bet you'd want to charge a bit for them. Most
People at cons don't want to pay a lot for a tail. Cheap/bland tends to sell more, unfortunately for creative desingers such as yourself (:
My word of advice, offer a slight discount for someone to commission one of those tails for you, before its made? Like, make one to show off, then offer similiar designs to see if someone is interested? I mean, those designes are all really, really pretty (: would hate to see hard work going unsold!

Yeah. Most people above have been saying the same thing. ^^; Pains me a tiny bit (just a small bit) 'cause the blander tails I just don't find interesting (ironic since my own fursona only has a two toned tail XD). Plus they all kinda look the same. I just wouldn't know how to make my version of an orange and white or orange and black fox tail stand out from person a, b, and c's orange and white/black fox tails. It's an interesting challenge to figure out but there's only so much you can do with making a natural looking fox tail. ^^;
Well 1 and 2 I was just gonna make for the fun of it. Was gonna use 1...don't know what I'd do with #2, I just wanna make it. XD But I'm sure I can make something else to work around it. ^^; So I'd be making examples so I'm not saying I can do something then not actually doing it. Just need to narrow down the list of possibilities. But I'd definitely make at least one to show off and see if people are interested. :3

Being a person who actually attends ACen every year, I can tell you a lot of the tail vendors there are so incredibly cliche and boring. They have red fox tails, redder fox tails, brown fox tails, etc. I think the reason for the solid colors thing is that it's easier to mass produce and it's not so specific. Some people might say "hey wow that looks awesome!" but when a character doesn't come attached to it they don't see a point to buying it(at least from an anime con goer mentality).
Personally, I've gone looking for random crazy styled things at conventions and if it doesn't suit a character I own, I usually make one up to fit it! I like the idea of something that's more personal to me, so I try to buy things(or make things) that make me different apart from everyone else.

Yep, I've been going to Acen for...about 7 years now. And have been wanting to buy a tail for maybe 3 or 4 of those years. Just nothing stands out. They're all the same. I'm not one to care if it's for a character or not, just that it could be fun to have to have one. Nothing super crazy, but something that was more interesting than a red fox tail.
Though I wonder if they'd even buy it if a character were attached (anime fandom wise)...A part of me thinks people would be interested. But logically that wouldn't be the case. While things like character kigurumis do well, I doubt that partial character cosplays would do nearly as well.

I actually really like this. The most interesting thing I've ever seen at a table is just having a special color (like a neon pink) with a white tuft at the end... These are all such interesting designs *.*
and if you'd be able to make these tails I know I would loooooove to commission you for a tail for my http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5663957/ Svetalna's tail (not as 'interesting' as these, but still... not something I want to send to someone who can only do party animal tails http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/3.....l_Costume.html
the idea sounds wonderful if you can get people to fall in love with your designs X3

And same here. Either a pink or a lime green tail with a black or white tuft at the end. But they're still very non-specific/non-detailed so they're usually cheap and I guess that's why people like those things more. While I'd really like it if people would fall in love with designs like these, that might be asking for a bit much so better to start off with some interesting things for display then similar but more natural looking versions of a few of the above designs.
And her tail's so pretty! <3 Once I get the practice in with sewing detailed markings, I might open for custom tail commissions. <3

Yeah, even if you were to start off small (since your name is way out there with art, but people may be wary of your tial-work) and you could test the waters with more outlandish and fun and uniques designs... heck, that could even be a store policy... something about 'You are unique, so why shouldn't your tail be?' or something XDD
and ty ;.; I loooove the thought of having a tail of her design, but a lot of people are scared to touch that much detail (as am I!) and I read that Orange04 is interested in those too XD I'll have to go Gladiator style to get a slot! lol

Haha. That'd be a cute story policy. XD There's generally a market for anything right? Heh, right off the bat doing something like that wouldn't go over so well. But maybe later on it could.
I'm a detail sort of person. Ironic since 1) I usually don't put much detail in my own character designs and 2) I generally don't draw with that much detail. ^^; When it comes to costuming/cosplay, I always wanna see something really detailed though. x3

I thought I left a comment on this back when I first saw this. : O
The pink and blue is a really lovely color choice and with the white separating them it lessens the harshness that could happen when putting those two colors side by side. I've always been drawn to natural colors such as the two brown ones up there and if I could afford it I would honestly purchase them. If you do make them I'd be a little jealous cus of all the detail within each tail will probably make them difficult to make. :O
