A few weeks back I discovered the VOD channel of one Andrew Shouldice, who is one of the developers of the game Tunic. He is fond of cartography and likes to map the games he plays, and he is currently in the process of a blind first playthrough of NIGORO’s mind melting exploration game La-Mulana (which has quite a history of its own I won’t get into here). I have a love-hate relationship with La-Mulana, since it’s a shining gem of an exploration puzzler that is just too damn hard for me personally to complete (those bosses are just too much, but that’s a me problem). The game is a complex weave of puzzles, platforming challenges, combat and some very out-of-the-box thinking to figure out a lot of it. It’s the kind of game you must read the manual of. Meticulous note taking and yes, mapping is required to finish this game without help. It’s that kind of beast.
Andrew, or Dicey as he goes by, has created his own fully animated 3D Vtuber (I believe he coded it himself) that is amazingly expressive and really adds a lot to his streams! His character is this mouse. I struck upon the idea of him in the shoes of the game’s protagonist Lemeza Kosugi, meticulously mapping the ruins as he investigates them with magitechnical skill.
The actual map Dicey is working on is a real work of art.
The picture itself came together shockingly well. I honestly didn’t have much trouble. I managed to catch up in Dicey’s VODs and caught one of his streams live to surprise him with the picture. He loved it, and so did everyone else. So much warm fuzzies that I really needed. I’m just happy to be able to give back, you know? I like making people happy, what can I say.
You can find Dicey at https://www.twitch.tv/andrewshouldice and his YouTube VOD channel is called Cartography Zone. If you want to see the reveal of my picture, it happened at the start of episode 38. While it was a great moment for me I’m glad it didn’t disrupt things too much (people do not come to the Cartography Zone for some random artist’s work). I kinda liked the idea of being able to attend, give some real joy and promptly fade into the background. It was great :)
Thanks for everything, Dicey.
