Kha'eshan Bestiary: Villayeena
The Villayeena is a predatory mammal native to the Great Coastal Grasslands of the Eruth continent. It is another descendant of the Villabiga and has convergently evolved to fill in the same niche as Earth's spotted hyena.
It is an aggressive but cautious creature, ready to attack anything it perceives as easy prey. However, it will hold back if it feels like its potential meal can fight back and defend itself. If the risk of injury or death is too great, the Villayeena will back away and search for something easier to kill.
...
That is, if it hunts alone. Small gangs of Villayeena often patrol the grasslands and take down prey much larger than themselves. However, unlike hyenas, gangs like these have no hierarchy or order. These predators cooperate for only as long as their prey still draws breath. Usually, the strongest or most ferocious individual eats first, leaving the rest awaiting their turn.
While they can and will take carrion, they prefer fresh meat, hunting for most of their food. If the pickings are slim, they are ready to try to chase away other predators from their kills. Even hunters as large and formidable as the Vilgorrah will back away when confronted with a gang of hungry and desperate Villayeenas.
Lone travelers through the grasslands need to be on guard at all times. The moment they show weakness, the Villayeena is going to strike.
