The jets you are flying against are smaller, faster, and more maneuverable - just like the enemy MiGs.
The clock is ticking, and as of now, we are keeping score"

Fun fact: many of the top aviation mechanics for the F-5 and T-38 fleets are grandpas. There's so much tribal knowledge these old folks have, it's basically impossible to commit it all to the technical manuals. Most are past retirement age, but they love the old birds, so they keep working on them.
They can take some getting used to (or so I've heard), because they'll work on a TN or BUNO (depending on the service) for a while, then take a coffee break and read a magazine, before they get back into it. Can drive some of the younger mechanics, who're working to meet the demands of their higher-ups, nuts. But nobody knows those aircraft better.
Most of them really did "write the book" on maintenance for those aircraft.
They're a hoot. Crabby. Profane. Dirty. But absolutely brilliant.
