nealis anniversary happened while FA was down! april 27th for his 'generation', and april 28th for his first official drawing, and i finished this on april 30. i was gonna draw it a few days earlier, but i had an essay and two half-essays due the days before that i had been procrastinating on. i was also originally going to do just a simple cake or group picture like i usually do for these anniversary pictures, but instead i decided to give him a proper ref sheet! i thought doing one for him was a bigger priority than many of my other characters simply for how weird he is, and i thought making a ref would be a good way of formally introducing who/what this character actually is
creative backstory:

neali is my third 'official' 'object' character and is actually still my third newest character as well, despite being over two years old at the time of posting this. he is my first and so far only character that i technically did not design, as his design was based on a prompt from Craiyon (some may remember it as DALL-E) in 2023. i was trying to get inspiration for actual object characters like a yo-yo (this was before i had a yo-yo character) or a foam ball, but instead i generated some pretty weird ones, since this was when Craiyon was still pretty bad. i was apparently trying to generate a 'spinning top' character and this is what it gave me. not to mention, it has extra eyes and an arm growing out on top of its head, which i decided to turn into cheek marks and an anglerfish-like lure respectively
personality:
neali is a mysterious case, even in the context of his universe. he has an odd appearance that doesnt quite resemble any real world object. his origins are unknown and he cant even speak to others in an understandable way, but still finds ways of communicating through gestures and limited facial expressions. hes very loyal and passionate to his friends and is a quick learner. hes also patient and forgiving to those he trusts. although, to strangers, he may come across as asocial, tone deaf, or even aggressive because of his alien-like nature
also, while his gender and sex are officially 'unknown', he doesnt seem to have any preference in terms of pronouns. i like to think that he doesnt really have a strong concept for stuff like gender to begin with
