Notching one of his last arrows, Aaron calls back to Moriss, pleading to the owl's pride and supposed majesty in a last attempt to talk his way out of this situation.
Moriss laughed in mockery of the little mouse, taking off from his perch, soaring around the clearing, red eyes focused on the rock Aaron hid behind. He taunted and chastised him, using his position to throw off his location until he dove down for the kill, only coming into view of the mouse's position at the last second, talons extended for the kill--
The mad owl's talons pierced the snow and ground. His hard landing, intended to kill his prey, threw him off balance as he staggered and spun around, searching to where the intruder had dodged him again, only to find no mouse at all! Embarrassingly shaking his head free of upended snow and soil, Moriss stood straight to find the cloaked mouse already halfway across the clearing, sprinting for the cottage!
Aaron heard the owl's furious screech from being outwitted and grit his teeth, his legs and footpaws working like mad to traverse the snow-covered grounds. From behind, Moriss took off in pursuit of his target.
(Sorry for the four-month absence. I'd dealt with the loss of a pet ferret among other things and just couldn't bring myself to continue to write this little story for that long.)
