Spring, 1351
A day later the dragon and human found themselves back at Giant’s Pass, looking at the familiar monolith of the two massive figures frozen in stone.
“Back into the Back Valley again.”
“Yep.”
Mera had flown Logan over to the Giants, skipping the treacherous week-long hike of previous trips. Now only the dense foliage of the great forest prevented the dragon from going directly to their destination.
“Two days, a much shorter and much more enjoyable trip.” Mera smiled.
“Will the Sabines be as welcoming to us?” Logan asked, perhaps more to himself.
“I don’t know. You humans attacked them again didn’t you? New war, whole armies, big slaughter?”
The Forester frowned at the comment. “Well I didn’t.”
“Will that matter to them?”
“I hope so.”
Slowly the two figures worked their way down the trail. The road had been improved, with widened and graded paths, leveled inclines and simple footbridges, whether by the Tassurians marching South or the Auxians marching back North, neither knew for sure. Otherwise the landscape remained the same as it had been twenty five years ago.
“I feel old.” Logan muttered, as the dolomite monolith gradually loomed over them. “I feel like we've been fighting the same struggle over and over again for decades.”
“It is what it is. We are not gods, we can only act and respond to the whims of fate."
“You're a dragon. Do you believe that?”
Mera shrugged. “I try to. Though it may seem otherwise, even we dragons are not gods. Otherwise I would be a good friend and cure your human disease and be done with this quest.”
“Well, I appreciate your efforts nonetheless.”
“Glad to be of help.”
Logan sighed. “Hopefully the Sabines can remain friends as well.”
“That's their choice to make.”
