This MerMay season, I’m looking for a bit of inspiration and want to give you wonderful people the chance to share your ideas! Is there a certain kind of aquatic animal you think would make for an interesting merperson? Maybe some sort of crustacean or mollusk — or maybe a kind of echinoderm or cnidarian?
Perhaps there’s a particular character you think would look good as a merperson?
Or maybe there are themes you’d be interested in, like transformation, interspecies romance, or whatever else?

What about some with tails based on sessile animals, such as maybe barnicles (fun fact: barnicles have proportionally the longest male organs in the animal kingdom), or semi-sessile ones, such as sea anemones?
As for themes, how about mers engaging in typical behaviour of the animal they're based on? Like how clownfish start out as male, but turn female later if they're the largest fish in their group? Or how sea anemones can reproduce asexually via fission?
