"Steady now lads, we have their trail"
American hero, special forces pioneer and militia captain, Benjamin Church. Founder and leader of Church's Rangers: a mixed white/native militia during King Philip's War which specialized in skirmishing and saw heavy action, eventually being the ones to kill King Philip himself at its end. Pictured here with a flintlock musket, mixed western and native clothing and a naval cutlass which he famously carried.
Fineliner Pen and dipping Ink. 2022.
As part of my history degree, I wrote a dissertation on the little known conflict of "King Philip's War" in the New England Colonies. This was fought in the 1600s between English colonist militias and their native allies against other native tribes of the area, brought on by the rapid expansion of the New England colony. To go with it, I began a series of portraits depicting both the colonists and native peoples of the time.
