A spaniel sharpshooter belonging to Benjamin Church’s colonial Rangers fires on retreating Indians during King Philip's War. Church’s Rangers mixed Indian tactics with European weapons to fight on their enemies’ terms. His kit and clothes show the lessons learned. The flintlock musket is used over a slower Civil War era matchlock, with a short cutlass for close quarters fighting in dense forest. Waterskin, powder supplies and ball are carried for extended skirmishing while his clothes include Indian style moccasins, breeches and a knit cap.
As part of my history degree, I wrote a dissertation on the little known conflict of "King Philip's War" in the New England Colonies. This was fought in the 1600s between English colonist militias and their native allies against other native tribes of the area, brought on by the rapid expansion of the New England colony. To go with it, I began a series of portraits depicting both the colonists and native peoples of the time.
