While reading a story by Randall Garrett, I noted one small detail added to a scene to make it more science-fictional : transparent roofs over the streets of New York to keep the rain away. This reminded me of the Spanish toldos, textile awnings stretched over the streets to create shade and reduce heating from the sun. So I wanted to design a more advanced version reflecting infrared and ultraviolet while letting visible light pass.
