I'm guessing if this is as hardboiled as it seems, the automatic will jam and the revolver will not. No one who is sufficiently Noir trusts such modern gas operated tomfoolery.

...which is exactly why law-enforcement and truely knowledgeable gunners endorse revolvers.
On a side note, a buck of a prey race would be an ideal fit for this kind of work. Kinda hard to get the jump on someone custom-designed to sense/detect such tactics...

I wrote the story that goes with this drawing (which I commissioned). The question of automatic versus revolver is central to the way the story turns out, indeed -- but jamming isn't one of them. Though, mark you, I *had* considered that as an angle.
