VIROTALVS GALLICVSThe boar's simple presence attracts no shortage of attention - near 8 feet tall, broad as an ox, arm and chest dyed in whorls of faded blue woad, the shaggy hog makes for an imposing and altogether foreign presence when in attendance at the Roman forum of Messana. Within that great and frenetic bustle of that significant port city, clearly he is of a low station in society - he wears the rough tunics afforded to lowborns, though the rough and faded tartan cloak over his shoulders and basic ironwork ornamenting his person appear to flaunt such conventions. The few words of Latin he ever bothers to speak are crude and roughly accented to boot, only further marking him out as a foreign barbarian lacking in the civilizing refinements of Roman Republican society.
But he does not carry the full burdens of caste restrictions nor the benefits of anonymity, for this is Virotalus Gallicus - Virotalus 'The Gaul' - one of the most seasoned and formidable gladiators in all of the province of Sicilia. Mere survival brings about fame in it's own right in such a trade, and Virotalus' longevity has been nothing short of a spectacle in itself, marked by a spider-web of scars cut across the hog's frame. Near 12 years spent as a feature in the arena, amounting to some 50 victorious bouts including no less than 5 fought Sine Missione and a spectacular debut in which a de-facto execution as a prisoner of war instead resulted in the Gaul slaying a tiger imported for the purpose. Words are traded as broadly as wine and grain in a city like Messana, and even ludi in places as far away as Neapolis and Cyrene have petitioned for him to be matched against their best fighters.
