Indeed tribbles are linked to guinea pigs! It was noted that the tribbles of the Star Trek episode (1967), although nominally based after the invasive rabbits in Australia, are very similar to the flat cats of a sci-fi novel (The Rolling Stones, 1958), that in turn is not unlike the book Pigs Is Pigs (1905), that features... fast multiplying guinea pigs!
That was a very fast summary, but it always makes me thing of guinea pigs as ultimate Trek mascots ❤️
