With Humanity, it seems destroying things is what we do in fact, excel at. Our ability to rebuild however, is also second-to-none.
I'm hardly an Archeologist, not by a long stretch, but I LOVE ancient history/civilizations. I spent so many years hiking/camping/exploring throughout the Great Southwest, and focused on as many ruins as I could find (Either Native American or ghost towns/mines). It's so eerie being in places that once had thriving socities, people going about their lives, and now, it's all just dust and ruin. All those living stories we'll never know about, and that's such a tragedy.
In our modern world, the wounds of war/calamity still exist. There are still places in rebuilt cities that have the scars. Now faint, maybe forgotten by modern society, but there as a reminder for those who care to learn and find them.

and that about sums it up...
I saw a wonderful image where the artist took an actual photo of a French village that was nothing but rubble with a German soldier walking down what was left of the street, and on the right side of the image superimposed the village in its totally rebuilt condition.
