Nope, if you're thinking about something from the 80's your about a decade too far ahead.

Well, I don't particularly hate any of the newer stuff - it's just that I was fortunate to grow up with the legendary stuff. My brothers and I were lucky enough to live in an area where the original shows were broadcast, and even if there weren't subtitles we could still follow the stories - they were that well done. Leiji Matsumo and Go Nagai ruled. We saw Mach Go Go Go before it was Speed Racer, we saw Space Cruiser Yamato before it was Star Blazers and if murder wasn't illegal somebody would be dead at my hands for turning Gatchaman into you-know-what.
Yeah, you West Coasters had it good, without the Rockies, plains, and Mississippi River getting in the way of the waves of awesome coming off of Japan.
When I was a wee laddie one of the local UHF channels played the original Ultraman series but since we were on the wrong side of one of my home state's many hills, I could only watch it when I was over at a friends' house. I got my karmic payoff lo these many years later when the series finally hit the shelves on DVD, with original Japanese and subtitles yet.
Go Nagai is due a special throne in crazy person Valhalla just for the evil robot designs in Mazinger Z alone. (Not to mention Aphrodite A's... *ahem* armaments.) Dude's muse probably can dislocate her shoulder to get out of her straight jacket.
Don't get me wrong, aside from the examples you mention, which themselves ain't exactly brand spankin' new, I don't hold anything against the new stuff. Still, gimme a non-ironic, non-deconstructed, giant robot vs. rubber monster dustup, live action or animated, and I'm as happy as a kaiju sized clam.

Western PA didn't have quite that rich a palette of delights, and as I said Channel 53 was on the wrong side of the hills from me, so I was lucky if I got half viewable static with our analog, mechanically tuned antenna. (You'd crank a dial with compass points and it would go Ker Chunk Ker Chunk Ker Chunk until it pointed in the right direction. You kids these days with your youtubes and hulus and downloadable media.)
Eventually, another UHF station opened up, Channel 22, but it didn't carry the older live action stuff. Still, there was Voltron, Robotech, Galaxy Rangers, Speed Racer, He Man, Centurions (which was a surprisingly sophisticated show) and so on so on so forth.
I kinda miss those days. There really aren't independent TV channels anymore...

Yeah, but what I really miss is the "localness", for lack of a better term. The shoestring kid's shows (In Pittsburgh we had Captain Pitt introducing the cartoons.) and late night horror movie hosts. The line up of syndicated shows and dreadful Saturday afternoon movies.
I spent a fair bit of my young adult years in Cleveland, and fondly remember Big Chuck and L'il John (now gone off the air in 2008), sucessors to Ghoulardi's legacy. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U41MxzxvPNA)
Ah well, all that crazy do-it-yourself-ness has migrated onto the internet these days. Just shows things don't change, they just move around a bit...

Oh, hell, yeah. I had kindergarten crushes on Pixanne and Sally Starr, and Wee Willie Webber was my hero. On a visit to WCAU with my elementary school class, we actually saw some of the sets for the Gene London show...
Those were the days...

Funny how most of Philly's early kids show hosts didn't go for costumes or characters, whereas in Pittsburgh our late night horror movie host was the one who opted for a suit coat and tie over a black cape and vampire fangs. Maybe it was something to do with the pop/soda line. I guess Pennsylvanians didn't go for all that glitz and glitter.
I was never a horror movie fan, so I didn't watch a lot of Chilly Billy Cardille (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImKEFbKYWTM), but I was definitely aware of him as a news/weather guy on WPXI. (Which was commonly the day job of the late night hosts.) Of course the real powerhouse for weather was Joe ("Paatly Claady") DeNardo on Channel 4.
We're turning into two rambling old men, Mitch...
