Okay, I'll explain. This is the third in a series of sketches I just scrapped. I've had these winged critters on the brain for awhile now, and while I really, really want to draw one, I just can't get their wings right.
I thought this one was cute though.

HI! :3
You remember our discussion about these guys, I'm sure. I kept iterating on their design and ultimately wound up with something like this. I eventually wanted to give them real flight, as opposed to just being able to glide, and I also wanted them to have the ability to hold weapons while flying, which is what ultimately led to the separation of wings and arms (I think you suggested that earlier). However, I thought of most of the dragons and bats and stuff I've seen on FA and in other places, and I realized that any time those creatures are on the ground, their wings are completely useless. I didn't really want that to be the case, so I imagined wings that were functional despite that.
I imagined flexible wings with additional segments and hands that had opposable fingers. Ones that could be used for gripping and locomotion when they weren't in use for flying. Also swimming. Since they swim now. Regardless of whether I draw the wings like a bats or a dragons or what, though, I have trouble with the logistics of the skin that stretches between the joints. Perhaps It needs to connect to their legs as well, so it wouldn't wrap around them as much when they pull their tails forward like this.
Also they have quills now. Quills have interested me lately as a furry defense mechanism. :P

It doesn't, but I think it would allow them to be much more flexible when gripping, bending and flexing. This sketch is pretty bad, I gave up on it after realizing it would be impossible to get it to look right with the wings.
In order for them to be used as an additional appendage, more than just wings, I think the extra joint in there might be important for bringing them around in front of his body. They are attached to his back, so, at best, the first segment couldn't bend past his shoulders, the extra two segments are like giving him additional arms at that point, allowing for the use of catching fish, operating control panels and whatnot.
Imagine them bending down at his sides, then coming up under his arms to extend out directly in front of him. It seems like it would give him far more range of motion and flexibility in all directions for the purpose of dexterity and control.
...I don't know, maybe it's just a stupid idea.

Sounds a little complicated to me. In order for something like that to happen, it'd have to be relatively effective and I... just don't see it. Sorry :(
Maybe if you made them a little more batlike, until they get to the last spot, and then 'join' them all the way down the spine?
