Merlin β The Lighthouse Keeper of Innsmouth ( Lovecraftian-inspired characters)
In the storm-lashed coastal town of Innsmouth, where the fog refuses to lift and the sea holds more secrets than it reveals, lives Merlin the Sea Cat, the solitary keeper of the lighthouse on Devilβs Reef.
He is a shadowy figure with fish-like skin, salt-encrusted hair, and eyes that seem to see through flesh and lies alike. Anyone who encounters him instinctively feels that something about him is⦠wrong.
Merlin is the first one curious visitors meet or rather, the first to warn them. βTurn back,β he says in a cracked voice. βThis town devours what it does not know.β He often appears suddenly, without footsteps, as if the mist itself had spat him out. His warnings sound like prophecies dark, vague, but disturbingly precise.
But the truth is even more unsettling: Merlin is not human. His true form is hidden beneath the hood of his raincoat. On nights when the sea calls, his slimy skin is revealed, along with glowing gills that pulse softly. Merlin is a sea cat an ancient being, born in the depths beneath Devilβs Reef, shaped by darkness and the chants echoing from below.
Once, he was a messenger of the deep, a child of Dagon, but now he is a guardian of the threshold neither fully creature nor true defector. He does not guard the lighthouse to save ships, but to imprison what slumbers beneath. And yet⦠sometimes he can be seen at new moon, standing at the shore with his hands raised to the horizon, as the water rises unnaturally and strange voices whisper through the wind.
The people of Innsmouth avoid him. Perhaps because they sense that he knows more than he says. Or perhaps because he reminds them of what they themselves once were.
