Kalju had trained for months at the gym, spending many days very sore and tired. He adhered to a strict diet to maximize muscle build and minimize any excess fat. Before the competition, he nearly starved and dehydrated himself to achieve the coveted chiseled appearance, carefully struggling to stay upright in front of the scrutinizing gaze of the judges. Yet for all his efforts and agony, he only achieved second-place, and the silver medal.
