This here is an original species of the Nine Realms, the Jox.
Essentially everything female is born pregnant, but I can try to explain the mechanism for that later. But the pregnancy is kept in suspension until adulthood, when she is ready to find a mate.
Females train in the art of various forms of combat throughout their lives. Especially swords.
Courting basically lasts the duration of this pregnancy. Towards the end, her training is designed to test the devotion of her intended husband. His job? Stay focused on her and their surroundings. And try not to get stabbed.
This whole thing is designed to keep their race strong; she cannot afford to take it easy on him, because she may find herself depending on his protection one day. She needs to know he is able to do it.
It also doesn't help that the hormones make her pretty aggressive at this point, and that her friends have made up stuff about him to rile her up (this is typical for this thing; his eyes staying locked on hers is part of the test).
Oh, and they have fangs with certain venoms. If he passes this test, she will drop the sword; only to give him a small bite, enough to render him unconscious. Then to drag him away as husband.
If he fails... well, that entirely depends on where the sword hits. And his "best man" then has to try the challenge again in a few days in his place. And probably becomes the actual husband.
There's a lot to it all.

Dang... that could definitely prove a struggle here...
I mean, individual adaptations could be made, if the female knows these sorts of things in advance about her intended husband.
The ritual is designed to ensure the race of Jox remains strong, but I don't think it's meant to be cruel... XP
But yeah, with those kinds of things in place, the intended husband would absolutely deserve her by succeeding :3

Actually I think I messed up; you're right that I don't have autism, so I am attention deficit. I forgot the question was what I didn't have. Goes a way to demonstrate ADHD's memory issues.
I still got eye contact avoidance with my ADHD, so being easily distracted, want to avoid aye contact, and super into her womb? Yeah, I'd be doing that staring contest like someone plays Doom on Ultra Violence if she doesn't do those adjustments.

It actually may be that avoiding eye contact could help you, depending on various circumstances.
There would be a lot of other Jox females present, and if the wife-to-be doesn't see you making eye contact with anyone else, that may work in your favor.
Mostly the eye contact is to anticipate where the sword is going next; if one can keep track of the blade movements (which is likely going pretty fast) and still quicker enough to avoid it, that still would be enough to prove the husband-to-be is able to perform any protection that he might need to.
