Colored sketch commission for

Rather than a character reference sheet, this was more of an armor reference sheet, specifically the blackened plate armor with silver trims that River uses (and that I freaking love, honestly). I have drawn this armor in a couple of commissions before, but we've recently realized we made a couple mistakes here and there from a historical point of view, like the gorget being on top of the chestplate rather than under it, so it was time for an update! I'm really happy with the result, I have to say, not to mention how fun working on this was! :D

Thank you so much, I'm thrilled with how this one turned out! We got a few weaknesses shored up, it's a lot closer to actual historical museum pieces of the period, and the added decoration on the abdomen looks great! More sturdy and put-together than before, and we even figured out the gorget and helmet integration!
I love it, and can't wait to properly integrate it into a new full armour ref!

I love the concept of "tail armor", but I wonder if it could conceivably be taken a step further...? Nothing too stiff or heavy, given the tail's role in maintaining balance, but given many species habit of aggressively swishing/lashing their tails when stressed, upset, or as a threat display, a lightweight short blade attachment, bayonet, or even a simple double coil of barbed wire fitted to the outside end of a padded "tail sleeve" could be used to devastating effect under the right circumstances. And heaven help the poor fool who crosses an anthro Opossum rogue/Assassin; even if they got caught- "drop your weapons and put your hands on your head!" The possum does, but then whips a throwing knife into the guard's throat with her prehensile tail!🤯
My idea is like,
On the beginning, put some plates around the back and the tail transition, that would prevent strategic cuts that aims to cut their tail.
On the middle, the sleeve can be padded (inside or outside) with some simple chainmail, nothing too elaborate, just enough to make sure that blades can't hurt the tail.
On the end, maybe some light blades or something, that could stab the enemy backwards, that could be cool. Something inspired from dragons and dinosaurs are sources of great ideas.
And speaking of dragons, duh they're can just opt in plate the hell out of their entire tail, they have the power to do all that things. Tail armors are too underrated sadly, would love to see more of how these things goes!

In River's case, not enough strength and speed in the tail to be useful for cutting. You'd only have the tail muscles to power the blows, while with your arms, you can put your entire body behind the strikes. A poisoned needle dagger or something might work, but that's about it, at least for cats.
Other than the changes to the gorget and breastplate interaction, he changed the abdominal plates to be segmented, giving them a stronger and more flexible look, all at the same time. He also showed the integration of the gorget with the helmet, so we can see that they lock together directly. There's an update to the leg armour, giving them more wrap-around coverage of the thigh, and some chainmail in the ankle gap. There's the entire back view, of course, this is the first time we've seen the back of the armour.
And finally, he added the strap he had originally forgotten about, connecting the pauldron to the upper arm protection ;)

You see early plate armour develop in the late 14th century, and while it got more concentrated on the vitals and left the limbs more exposed, we have almost-full plate armour in the 17th and 18th centuries as well, and the breastplate only fell out of favour at the start of the 20th century - most European armies had cuirassiers for most of the first world war.
Plate armour lasted a whole lot longer than people think, and co-existed with guns the entire time it was in use.
