Niek Douwsma is the young apprentice of Harm Dijkstra, born in 2018 in rural province of Friesland. He's a very promising protégé, very skilled with plant magic, though it was that same magic that brought him into trouble initially. When Harm met him for the first time, he had vines grown all over his own house, which drew the attention of the Mages Council. Harm saw big potential in him and has taken him under his wing, helping him to control his raw power better. The kid was very eager to experiment with magic, and had proven to be an eager student. One day, his eagerness got the better of him and found a book with some very dangerous magic. When he tried out the Fiend Fire curse, things went horribly wrong, and the Fire attacked both his feet before Harm could extinguish it. Both furious and very concerned about his student, he gave him a stern speech about using magic responsibly after he had stabilised his condition.

Due to the nature of Fiend Fire, not even magic would be able to grow back his lower legs, as the magic burned it away from his soul. Since then, he walks with prosthetics, though occasionally he opts for a wheelchair, as it's less tiresome for him. It's a constant reminder to him that he has to control his power, so nobody gets hurt, including himself...
