At long last, the man behind the militia is revealed... and boy, I don't think I've spent this long working on an OC design since Yako. The base concept for Commander Irons was cooking since late 2024, but I went thru a lot of iterations on his abilities & finer details before I settled on a design I really liked. For an antagonist looming so large over a part of Mobius: Returners's lore, I really wanted him to look and FEEL important, so I hope y'all enjoy learning of him after all this buildup.
Age: 72
Strong Point: A military sage with 40+ years of experience in service.
Weak Point: His paranoia and self-righteousness alienate many.
Likes: Power, anonymity, advanced technology
Dislikes: Adolescents, people who question orders
Backstory:
A warhawk with ties to the “Old Guard” of the Guardian Units of Nations; ergo, the hierarchy of veteran soldiers & higher-ups who held sway over the United Federation’s military from the era of Gerald Robotnik, into the early years of his grandson Ivo’s global terrorist activity. Once a mere Lieutenant, Irons always had his sights aimed higher, & swiftly rose through the ranks of the G.U.N. until he’d become a regular influence on the military’s handling of threats like the supposed emerald-thief Sonic the Hedgehog- meet the opposition with force, lock down unknown factors under military control, and never let anyone check their authority. For decades he and the rest of the Old Guard had comfortably controlled this sense of order, but Commander Abe Tower’s epiphanies during Shadow the Hedgehog led to the Old Guard’s power being limited- until the Eggman Empire’s sudden attack on the UF, in the War to Take Back the Planet. Suddenly the ‘upstart’ Doctor that Irons had thought little of beforehand was steamrolling the old bird’s army, even annihilating Commander Tower in the relentless onslaught.
This would turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Irons, as without a clear replacement lined up, he exerted his connections to slide quickly into the role of G.U.N.’s new Commander. Believing Tower’s outspoken role on the front lines of the Eggman War’s early days to be a foolish venture, Irons moved his military’s operations underground, focusing more on intel-gathering & stockpiling resources and less on an active resistance to the Empire while awaiting an opportunity for the G.U.N. to return. Blessed once again by the six-month end to the Empire, Irons capitalized on the liberation of the UF (partly led by a scrappy young Resistance group defeating Egg Boss Turner: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/59487648/) to bring the G.U.N. out of hiding and to begin his Operation: ‘Nova Genesis’. To Irons, the G.U.N.’s agents had strayed far from their roots in the military, and with this bold new plan for a new military doctrine, he intended to rapidly rebuild ranks & consolidate power under his own single authority.
But with how much he wished to avoid the spotlight, to keep himself from being a target like his predecessor, Irons needed someone to act as proxy. Someone who would carry his orders out to the letter, who showed obedience to a superior but would command the obedience of those beneath them… and through GUN’s intel teams, he found one. A sheep who’d been recently discharged from & disillusioned with the Restoration, who shared his interest in ‘optimizing’ a military organization & ensuring adherence to protocol. With the help of his new Director of R&D and their hypno-spiral technology, newly-appointed Field Director Lanolin (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/55652692/) had her second chance at making a better world… and Commander Irons had his proxy.
With his two Directors secure in their roles and his military increasingly falling in line with Nova Genesis’s ideals, Irons now boasts a considerable army under his command; one that he can control safely from the shadows while Director Lanolin issues his orders as the ‘face’ of the armada. But having power in numbers isn’t enough for the warhawk; after past setbacks, the UF has lost faith in the G.U.N. to be the international superpower they once were… and he won’t settle for competing with a bunch of naive rookies like that ‘Restoration’ group, either. Those children have neither the experience nor the infrastructure to do what they’re trying to do; the world needs a strong, wide hand charting a course for the future- and if the UF and other nations won’t recognize that, Irons intends on making them see things his way with Stage 3 of Operation Nova Genesis.
Personality:
Irons has little in humor and even less in free time, spending almost every hour at his desk plotting the advancement of the G.U.N.’s influence across the globe. His superiority complex to others & his paranoia of threats to both his person and his power as Commander define him; he’s very grabby about any significant resource or power source and believes they’re only “secure” in G.U.N. hands. (Hence, why he shrouds himself in both secrecy and in his kevlar mantle at practically all times.)
“Protection” and “Peace” in his mind are viewed through a lens of aggressive control and perpetuating the fear of force; he sees the Restoration as incompetent & practically as much of a threat as the lingering Egg Bosses and has made it routine to undermine them as he believes they undermine his army. For as old as he is, though, Irons has a surprisingly black-&-white concept of G.U.N. as heroes, while those who question or oppose their authority are evil. He sincerely believes that his actions will make the world better (and will make the G.U.N. into the great superpower it was 50 years ago), but he has no self-awareness to question if his way is the only way to bring peace- much less if it’s the right way.
Powers/Abilities:
While he prefers to avoid direct combat, it’s in Gilder’s nature to be prepared for such an occasion ahead of time. Though he covets the mysterious power of Shadow’s Chaos Control, he’s wary of its ramifications on a person too (preferring to experiment with it vicariously through Project Eclipse)- instead, he opted for the safer, more overlooked power of ‘Tricore’ energy supplementing the mix of Krav Maga & MMA techniques he’s learned in his time as a soldier. He has no real superpowers to him outside of the Tricore, merely augmenting his physical capabilities- but in the hands of this experienced warhawk, that simplicity becomes lethally versatile.

For now, new comms are still on hiatus as I fill a queue of other invoices I agreed to pre-April 30th. I'll make an update later on socials:

He looks very cool and thretening, you did an amazing job with his design. Love the uniform and the detail of him not having visiible irises.
Also nice work with his backstory, the idea of how he wants to reform G.U.N the way he does is very interesting.
I have a character that's kinda similar to this, a human named Marcus Cain, but he chose to break away from G.U.N and become an indipendant antagonistic faction called S.I.N (Secret Intelligence Network), and unlike Irons here, he has been able to aquire the use of Chaos Energy.
It's cool seeing how people can have similar ideas yet be very destinct from each other.

Thank you! The lack of visible irises were something I went back and forth about in my head, but I decided to keep them as an allusion to the kind of silhouette-heavy, eyes-in-white faces in shadow that get used in works like Fullmetal Alchemist or other manga to suggest a dangerous or enigmatic person.
Cain sounds interesting as well; I get the sense from your comparison that he must have wanted to do good at some time, but when embroiled in the deeper end of intelligence and political intrigue, he lost his way and began to focus more on what was expedient or profitable to use his intel for. Will have to look for art/stories of him on your account later

DC's Darkseid is another good exaple of being used well that I can think of. Yeah it does an excellent job of exuding that menacing aura, especially when he's cloaked in shadows.
And yeah you have a fairly good read on Cain, starting off good intentioned when starting off in his youth, but those good intentions and his morals gradually eroding away into the most extreme interpretation of "the ends justify the means". He does want the world to be safe and secure, but he views Towers' methos as weak and inneficient, how he desired to fulfill that is a lot more authoritarian. (Also doesn't help that Towers did try to have him arrested during his attempt to clean up G.U.N.)

Commander Tower? Well, as stated in the backstory, Tower was killed on the front lines of the G.U.N.'s battles with the Eggman Empire during the early days of Forces- no thanks to the traitorous former Administrative branch member, Petrel Turner (seen here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/59487648/).
Gilder swooped into the job shortly thereafter, but to summarize their prior working relationship in brief, Irons liked the old man a lot more when he was on his aggressive anti-Shadow and anti-Black Arms military campaign, much less so when Tower softened his approach to leadership and focused more on diplomatic efforts. His ferruginous hawk species was chosen specifically to allude to the Hawk & Dove spectrum of international relations, after all.

Yakuza, huh? I've never played any of the games myself, but I do imagine most 'boss fights' in Mobius: Returners taking place in some 3D beatemup/spectacle fighter kind of format; you can probably tell with the combat-heavy approach of a lot of heroes & villains alike in this AU.
Glad to hear you like him!
