Reach for the light. AZIZ LIGHT! (The fifth element) . The theme of light aka hope is the movies theme as well as finding out who you are. This might not be the filmmaker’s intention but my analysis of the light theme in Balto
First thing: the granddaughter’s husky’s name is Blaze. Like a blaze of light.
The first animated one is the flare gun at Steeles race.
The yellow light is in half the frame and half the frame is blue as the wolves appear on the hill and behind Balto symbolising his half wolf heritage which is the thing that saves the day as he has fallen down the cliff in the heritage of the wolf scene.
Rosie is in the hospital and the light shines out on the dogs. Balto shows Jenna the broken glass and “sun” creating the Northern Lights. It is cut short when the doctor steps in front of the light to sick Rosie. Symbolising her hope being faint as the doctor tells them he is out of antitoxin for the diphtheria.
The light shines in the telegrapher’s office as he sends for more medicine aka hope for the children.
Light is shone as they try to get the medicine though by boat and plane. As they put the medicine in the box it shines like the sun and the lantern is put on top of the box. The trains own light and the light from the lantern is seen from the train going to Nenana and later on the sled all the way- even as the box falls down the cliff with Balto. The lantern in Nome is lit as literal hope for the children’s survival.
Light is shone from the boiler room as all the dogs are warm inside while Balto is out in the cold. He is literally excluded from the light as he is from the town. The sound of a hammer and nails draw his attention away from the hospital window and in the light he sees the carpenter, who just recently made a sled for the full of life Rosie, making small coffins. Light shines on Balto and he makes the decision to go find the team.
Steele goes in circles, panics and they fall down the mountainside. The light flicker as the camera zooms out showing how hope may be lost.
Light is shone from above as Jenna attacks the bear- literally being the hope that saves them all. Also as Balto falls down to the frozen lake he falls away from the sunlight above. This happens to Steele as well as he falls down the cliff.
As Balto finds the team and you can see the light coming from below and the lantern flickers on the sled. It is steady when Balto fight for the medicine.
I am not sure if the red light from the setting sun is supposed to be the hope/light fading for Balto and the children (it looks kind of hellish as well).
Balto grabs the rope on the box holding on to hope. As he falls it goes dark.
When all hope is lost the telegrapher turns it off and Nome goes dark and all the residents do the same. Nome is a dark place with no hope.
Jenna uses the broken glass and “sun” to create the northern light to guide Balto home. The northern Light is a sign of their friendship/love, Rosies hope and a way home.
Balto fights his way out of the snow and into the light of the sun. He sees the White Wolf and after seeing the box is unharmed he embraces his inner light and howls with the white (light) wolf. Climbs up with the box and light. Light is back on the sled all the way home.
Balto sees what Jenna did to guide him home. The lantern of hope is lit again by the telegrapher. They run in with the medicine into town. The medicine is almost glowing and the doctor holds it up to the light as he uses the syringe.
Balto is welcomed into the light walking through the door to see Rosie and him and Jenna stand in the light as they are cheered on. The real northern lights turn into a wolf and howls. All is well. Hope is restored and Balto is now proud of what he is.
Ending song is named Reach for the Light and is a song about finding out who you are.
As a tribute to my favorite movie of the event I will upload (as far as it is possible) something Balto-related each day of 2025. Here the gallery starts so you can see them all: https://www.deviantart.com/emberwol.....years-of-balto
“Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the winter of 1925.”
