In her mid 20s, one of Chaarybdea's teeth was replaced with a depleted Shard. At the time, she had no idea and simply thought she was replacing a bad tooth with a fancy looking and strangely strong gem. As is often the case with depleted Shards, however, this one was not entirely depleted. Over time and again much like many of the Shards it became more and more integrated into and with Chaarybdea.
The most obvious change that Chaarybdea noticed after getting the Shard tooth was that she never seemed to get full anymore and there was always a hunger in the back of her mind. No hunger pangs, but simply a desire that was now always there to eat. She is always ready and able and happy to eat more and the effects on her figure are always minimal and temporary no matter how much she eats.
Whatever Chaarybdea eats is digested at an incredibly fast pace and the energy and nutrients spread through her body. Most of the extra energy her body does not need, however, ends up going to the Shard to help it recharge little bit by little bit.
Given how much Chaarybdea can and does eat now with a literal bottomless stomach and endless hunger, this has meant that for decades now her body has been receiving far more energy and nutrients than one should normally be able to get and the presence of a Shard integrated into her has even removed the negative effects that such excesses could create. Instead, she has been kept remarkably healthy and with the energy of someone a third her age. Despite being in her mid 70s now she has the energy and health of someone in their 20s and despite whitening hair has the look of someone in their 30s.
All the extra energy and nutrients combined with again the presence of a Shard has even led to a very slow growth over the decades. Over nearly 50 years she's gained nearly a foot in height alongside ample heft to her figure and surprising strength lying beneath.
Background :
The first memory Chaarybdea can recall is a table full of food for a big family dinner... And of her digging into it and eating nearly a quarter of the food there before anyone noticed where she had gone to. Naturally, she likes to say that that was the start of her lifelong love of food. To try and counter her voracious appetite, Chaarybdea's parents encouraged her from an early age to start learning how to cook for herself and, just as she had with table of food, she leaned into the hobby with gusto.
Years passed and Chaarybdea continued to learn the art of cooking. Showing herself to be exceptional in the use of nearly every food (mushrooms proving her one weakness for many years largely because of her own distaste for them), she chose to hire herself out as a cook rather than go to college. At first to just some local restaurants before eventually deciding to start exploring the wider world. Learning recipes from books was one thing, but going out to find and experience new recipes and the cultures that spawned them? She believed that was the way to truly bring out the best in a dish.
This wanderlust took the Sharpedo all over the world, meeting a great many peoples. Even coming across some rather unusual ones. Unusual ones like an unusually large Marowak living in a cabin in the woods not far from the town she herself had grown up in and with an accent that marked her as definitely not being a local and who had a look in her eyes that suggested there was far more to her than met the eyes... Despite intimidating stories around her, Chaarybdea still went to meet this curious hermit after also hearing stories of her having an impressive wine cellar. Morvala was accustomed to having to chase off youngsters on a dare to knock on the door of the "old crone" and government employees, but what she wasn't accustomed to were people coming up and asking if she knows any old recipes involving the use of wine.
The wandering Sharpedo even happened across an equally unusual Decidueye with a curious sword and a passion for sweets. The two spoke for hours over the different kinds of sweets and sweet dishes and while Chaarybdea didn't learn of new exact recipes, she did learn of ingredients that had fallen out of common knowledge over the years (some even centuries to her surprise and had her wondering how this Decidueye knew of them so personally).
She has even frequently met over her many years the unusual being, Yaarel, and they two have swapped stories of delicious dishes and curious cultures. Though only recently has she learned that the reason she never heard of some of the cultures and cuisines Yaarel spoke of was because these were from entirely different worlds.
Around her mid 20s, Chaarybdea made the questionable decision to try a Rock Type delicacy that, while they insisted it could be enjoyed by non Rock Types, it had to be done so carefully. Chaarybdea had never really been one for much caution, though, and went into the meal with the same gusto she showed when she went after the big family dinner in that old memory of hers. She actually managed to get surprisingly far, but eventually the expected happened with one of her fangs.
Impressed by Chaarybdea's willingness to accept such a risk and how far she got into the meal provided, her host offered her a curious gem in return and to pay for a local dentist to help replace the tooth. Rather than a normal implant, though, Chaarybdea asked that these surprisingly strong gem be shaped into a replacement fang and that it be the implant instead. A memento and reminder of how far she'd go in her journey to find and learn new recipes and ingredients.
What Chaarybdea did not know at the time and did not learn the whole truth of for another fifty years from her own granddaughter was that this gem that was now one of her fangs wasn't just any gem, but a Shard. A depleted Shard with barely any power left in it, but a Shard nonetheless with all that that entailed.
While she didn't know that her new fang was a Shard and didn't even know what a Shard was, Chaarybdea did start to notice several unusual things as the years passed... Chief among those was that she never really seemed full anymore. She could feel satisfied and happy from a meal, but there was always a lingering hunger in the back of her mind urging her to just keep eating. She usually ignored that hunger when in public, but nearly a year after first noticing this ever present hunger she chose to indulge in secret. She gathered together enough food that could be enjoyed by at least twenty people and still leave leftovers and began to cook. It took her an entire day, but she finally finished the feast and hungrier than ever... She began to eat. She ate and ate and ate and ate and loved every bite as she had truly poured all her best efforts into this. It wasn't until she was halfway done with the entire feast that she paused and realized how far she had gotten and that she didn't feel the least big full. Happily satisfied and certainly able to stop now, but that ever present hunger was still there... So after patting her food baby that was nowhere near the size it should be considering how much she had eaten, she continued. And she didn't stop until ever last bite had disappeared into her maw.
For once, Chaarybdea was actually left surprised by her own appetite. She had just finished off a feast that would have fed over twenty people and done so in a single sitting and she STILL felt like she could eat more. And that wasn't the only strange thing. The "food baby" of her stomach was nowhere near as large as it should have been and if anything was actually now smaller than it had been when she was at the halfway point in the feast! On top of these oddities, rather than feeling ready to take a nap and digest all this food she was instead brimming with energy. All of this went against everything she had grown used to through the rest of her life with regards to eating a huge amount of food in one sitting. There was also one other thing that she did not notice at the time but which would become steadily more apparent as more years passed... The fang that had been replaced by a Shard a year ago was now not just shimmering in the overhead lights but instead now glowed with a light of its own. Subtle for now, but it was there.
This giant meal ended up being a more important moment in Chaarybdea's life than she could have expected as it was thanks to that meal and all the extra energy it provided to the Shard was reawakened. It was still very weak and did not have the strength that other Shards had to bestow deification of some degree on someone, but it was now able to provide more benefits to the Sharpedo beyond just giving her an endless appetite. An endless appetite that served both to empower it with more energy from all the food and to strengthen and improve the health of Chaarybdea herself from all those nutrients.
As more time passed, Chaarybdea began to realize still more odd things in her life. Despite her advancing years she always had the energy of someone in their 20s and always remained remarkable healthy. On top of that, strange faintly glowing markings the same color as her replaced fang were slowly forming on the flukes of her tail almost like a slow motion tattoo taking years to form. Those she had no idea what was going on, but she chalked the health and energy to her often nomadic lifestyle keeping her fit and her healthy appetite keeping her healthy with some comfortable heft to her frame as well, but as the years passed it did grow steadily more impressive how youthful she was remaining in energy and health. Something her husband, a Heliolisk she met in her early 30s while making her way through a desert region, did rather appreciate.
Not long after getting married, she had her daughter, Rhea, who also was much to her husband's surprise... a Sandslash. Something unusual about the Moore family not tied to the Shard fang Chaarybdea now had was that their genetics had always been rather oddly chaotic. Chaarybdea for example was a Sharpedo, but her mother was a Gulpin and her father was a Lucario. Look back a generation, though, and her grandfather was actually a Sharpedo and her grandmother on the other side of the family was a Sandslash. This chaotic nature of the Moore family genes continued down through the line with her granddaughter who ended up a Lucario despite having a Sandslash mother and a Gallade father.
More years passed and Rhea grew up to have her own family while also continuing what was turning into a Moore family tradtion of a more nomadic lifestyle. But whenever she would come around and visit Chaarybdea it was growing only more apparent that Chaarybdea really did not seem to be as old as she should be. She still had that energy of a 20-something and anyone looking at her would think she was at most 40 rather than the 70+ she was at.
It was only after her granddaughter, Trorse, ascended to become a Demideity as the Goddess of Chaos (among several other things) thanks to accidentally eating a Shard and then Rhea's own ascension to the Goddess of Rock, Partying, and Youth thanks to Trorse's frequent visits home that the truth of Chaarybdea's fang became apparent. The reason why Rhea responded so powerfully and so positively to Trorse's own Shard-powered ascension and frequent presence back home was that it was already "in her blood". Over the many long years she had had it, Chaarybdea's Shard fang had literally become a part of her in a fundamental way. So when she had Rhea, some of what the Shard was and what it could do was passed down to the Sandslash. On its own, this wasn't enough to do any more than just give her a-lot of energy to match her personality. But when Trorse came home as a Demideity oozing deific power all based around what a Shard had done to her, it was like Rhea's own blood was activated in the same way all the energy from that long ago meal Chaarybdea had had had awoken her Shard fang.
With both her daughter and granddaughter having surprisingly ascended to Demideityhood, Chaarybdea is now also beginning to notice that the markings on her tail and her fang too glow brighter whenever either Rhea or Trorse visit her. Bit by bit, the pieces were all coming together and she began to understand... The markings on her tail so oddly similar to the ones on Trorse after she ascended, the stories of strange glowing gems found by several people around the world that had turned them into some level of divine, this gem that she had used to replace one of her fangs that had grown only stronger over the long years and even glowed itself these days, and her unusually good health and energy... She had some ideas of what the future may hold for her, and she was both curious and excited to see what may come.
And there's "Grandma Moore" finally complete!
As silly as it sounds, the whole idea of having both a Sharpedo character and that she's actually Rhea's mother all comes from an outfit swap picture where I had Rhea at a beach wearing Lut's swimwear and a "sharkish" grin... That got in my head the silly thought of Rhea having a Sharpedo somewhere in her ancestry and that then maybe it's actually her mother and then that that would also explain Trorse's appetite some and then an extra silly explanation that the pretty chaotic jumps from Sharpedo to Sandslash to Lucario is an example of the chaos Trorse already had in her even before she became a Demideity and welp... Chaarybdea! XD
Honestly kind-of crazy how many new characters and lore developments have come from those October outfit swap sketches... Best example of course being Lyn where one thing led to another and now she's the Goddess of Time in the Ynaaverse ^^
Regarding the colors I used for her body... Will say that when I tried the normal Sharpedo colors she just didn't look good. Way too much color saturation and while Sharpedo on its own looks good with those colors, those same colors on an anthro body like this just weren't working. c.c''
So I did some experimenting and hit on the idea of why not use some of Trorse's fur colors? Hint at the fact that Chaarybdea is Trorse's grandmother by using the muted blue and silver and black Trorse has on Chaarybdea? That and those violet eyes~ Really happy with how those look on her ^^
Also developing some new lore behind the Shards with Chaarybdea here and how the depleted ones form what could almost be called a symbiotic existence with those that find them...
But now with Chaarybdea done, I need to get the three Moores all in a picture together! <3 <3 <3
