This bust shot came out wonderfully! I love the detail and the rendering. They look like they are leaping out of the screen at you!

Arhulians have a pharyngeal jaw, like that of a moray eel. It is a second jaw that is normally nested inside the throat, that can be extended forward into the mouth. For eels, it's to help them swallow prey since they cannot expand their mouths like regular fish. For Arhulians, it's to help them swallow large prey whole and alive.

The "bite" is a four stroke process:
The outer jaw clamps down on the subject > the inner jaw moves forward and bites down > the outer jaw opens > the inner jaw retracts > repeat

Another feature is their split tongue. Arhulian tongues are hollow and can be used like a straw, or use the prehensile split end to reach for and ensnare small prey. Particually small specimens can be swallowed by the tongue itself!

The purpose for Arhulians to be capable of ingesting prey whole and alive is that their primary way of feeding is by keeping the prey in a suspended state while feeding off of their psionic energy. Although a seemingly limitless source of power, ingested beings have a limit to how much they can be 'drained'. Overfeeding will put the prey in a comatose state, and if not stopped; the beings bond betwen soul and body snaps. Functionally speaking, undergoing brain death - where even if their body is 'alive' there is no conciousness at the helm.

This psionic energy not only sustains the Arhulian far more effciently than chemical feeding, it allows the Arhulian fuel their psionic metabolism. This metabolism can be responsible for synthising, transmuting, or disposing of materials from within their bodies. Essentially - pulling energy and matter from nowhere.

Of course, Arhulians have the means to do things the 'traditional' way with organic matter to sustain themselves, it's just a lot less effcient. Particularly large and/or powerful Arhulian morphs reach a level of energy demand that chemical feeding is impractical to sustain them, and they exclusively feed off of psionic energy.
