One of the elevators in Emmet's burrow (seen in the background here) leads up to a loading bay on the surface which he uses to receive shipments destined for his lab.
(The garden is located round back of it. In fact the garden is basically in the middle of everything.)
He often has Sully sign for packages because Emmet doesn't like dealing with delivery people any more than he does, well, customers. Naturally every crate needs to be opened and inspected. Emmet seems worried that something or someone will try to sneak in that way.
This was James' first delivery to One Wombat Way, and he was already in a sour mood when he arrived.
Firstly the place was so @#$% out of the way.
Secondly there was the fact that his cellular and GPS mysteriously cut out once his truck got near.
Thirdly, he didn't know which of the mounds he was delivering to! There was a larger one that looked like a storefront, complete with a crude gravel parking lot, but the sign on the door indicated that it was closed. It took some circling around until he finally found the right place.
Inside was a gangly ferret who seemed like he might mercifully just sign for the crate and let him be on his way. The company kept James on a tight schedule and he'd already wasted way too much time on this delivery.
But no. He needed to open it first. Fine. Sometimes customers did that.
The ferret pried the lid off to find...
Packing peanuts.
Now James has to stand there—like an idiot—while that ferret flops around.
It's hot. He's been making deliveries all day, he's pretty sure this job has given him the back of an 80 year old, and here he is waiting for ferret playtime to be over. The company doesn't time-budget for styrofoam romps!
There was a forklift right there and the ferret didn't even let him use it!
