Shauna’s whole life was perfectly mediocre. 25 years and nothing to show for it. She received no major accolades in school, never went to college, had no hobbies she was good enough to profit from, worked 9-5 at Walmart, constantly being talked down to by her co-workers and old white people who came in there to buy useless junk.
Speaking of useless junk…Shauna actually did have one hobby that netted her a small bit of extra cash. That hobby was dumpster diving.
On days off, or days when Shauna just couldn’t be bothered to care about the work day tomorrow, she would sneak into the dumpsters of businesses late at night and purloin anything that looked interesting from the dumpster. After all, who knows? That weird, patterned metal pipe could be some remarkable, niche collector’s item that Shauna could make rent off of.
Tonight happened to be an off night, so Shauna got on her freshly-washed work gloves and set off in her car to the local thrift store. These places had all kinds of profitable items all the time. As dickish as it was to admit, Shauna had to admit that the people who ran these types of stores usually had no eye for value.
After pulling up to the parking lot and making sure no one else was around, Shauna fetched a garbage back out of the backseat and strolled around back to the green, metallic treasure chest she called the dumpster.
It took Shauna a moment, but she managed to get the sliding door of the thing open without making much noise, then crawled in. Luckily for her, the dumpster was filled just enough to allow her to comfortably stand in. …Well, as comfortably as one could stand when they were knee-deep in trash. Thank God this wasn’t a restaurant dumpster.
Shauna spent a while (around an hour or so) digging through the trash bags. Unfortunately, she mostly just found old, grandma clothes that no sane person would wear again. Shauna was just about ready to cut her losses and go home…but then she felt something.
When digging through the ugly, beige gowns and unnecessarily high-worn pants, Shauna felt something. It was rectangular and made of carboard. No doubt it was a boardgame of some kind.
With a smile on her face, Shauna gripped it and dragged it out of the bag before turning on her phone’s flashlight so she could read the title…
‘CYBER CITY: A Game of Adventure and Magic Through The Darkness!”
Now THIS definitely looked like something a nerd would buy for an exorbitant amount! Shauna assumed it was some sort of DND knock-off, but she’d have to look at it further to be sure.
…Not here though, it was too dark.
Shauna slowly climbed out of the dumpster and back into her car with the boardgame in tow. Soon she would make her way back to her apartment where she laid the game on her coffee table and opened it up. The first thing she noticed were all the pieces.
There were quite a lot of them, all of which seemed to be robots, or at least technological in nature. There were bizarre, cat-like creatures with wires stuck to their face, polygonal viruses with spiky ears, and even what seemed to be a giant, evil robot piece. Another thing Shauna noticed were that they were all sort of haphazardly scattered on top of what she guessed to be the playmat. As Shauna took them out and organized them on the table, she wondered if the pieces were always packaged like this…or if once upon a time there had been some sort of indented plastic bit for them to lie in.
Anyway, Shauna took the playmat out and set it to the side, then found the game’s instruction manual. She briefly remarked to herself about the weirdness of where it was placed…but then again, the game WAS thrown out from a thrift store.
Shauna picked the booklet up and started reading…
“CARD QUEST is an adventure board game all about making friends with your foes and obtaining treasures to help you on your quest to save the world! Start at the beginning of the Cyber World and make your way to the Queen’s castle in order to seal the dark fountain there! On the way must either FIGHT or ACT to escape conflict. Make valuable friends and dangerous enemies, and work together to bring peace to the Dark World!”
Shauna ‘Hm.’-ed to herself and kept flipping through the manual. Each enemy had its own bio, ways to spare or fight it, and how the host of the game was expected to act as them. This all but confirmed the game’s nature as a DND knockoff, but it was a very cool one.
But towards the end of the bio section, Shauna happened upon a character she didn’t have piece for. A shopkeeper by the name of Swatch.
Shauna narrowed her eyes and looked back over at the army of figures that were grouped up on the table…nope, no piece that matched Swatch.
Shauna sighed a bit. Losing a piece would definitely bring the resale value down a bit…but oh well, missing only one piece was insanely lucky for a find like this.
Shauna kept looking through the booklet until she hit the last page, which was dedicated mostly to assorted legal stuff and contact information for the company. One particular sentence caught her attention, though.
“If you have lost a piece, simply type the following code into any search engine: ‘cyber_world_replace.com’.”
“Hm.” Shauna mused again. Must be some sort of site to buy standalone figures. Shauna figured it couldn’t hurt to take a look at least. Maybe it wasn’t defunct yet.
Shauna whipped her phone out and typed the URL in…and it loaded to a completely black screen.
That was already weird, but it would only get weirder, as Shauna’s hands suddenly started to tremble. She groaned and ended up dropping her phone on the table. That’s when her eyes widened…
She saw thin. Black hairs beginning to sprout on her hands.
Shauna nervously held her hands up to her eyes, squinting to try and make sure what she saw wasn’t just some kind of hallucination.
Unfortunately for her, it wasn’t a hallucination. And the hairs kept growing until they got big enough to where Shauna could tell what they were.
They weren’t hairs at all. They were feathers. Ink-black feathers.
Shauna let out a yelp of startlement as the feathers rapidly consumed her hands, causing them to resemble wingtips.
It didn’t stop there, though. The layer of feathers began to creep up her arms, and as they did so, her muscle mass began to rapidly swell, becoming more and more masculine by the second. The sudden, rapid growth of her arms began to split the sleeves of her flannel overshirt, and Shauna yelped again as she watched her arms brutishly push their way through the fabric.
Shauna tried to keep holding her arms up, but they had grown too heavy for the rest of her body to support, and she ended up dropping them on the table, lurching her body forward as well. Shauna huffed and puffed, her mind racing to find a logical explanation for what was happening to her, as well as trying to find a way to stop this.
“There-There’s no way that t-typing in a url c-could-HRRRNGH-!” Shauna thought aloud before being interrupted by a spike of pain through her lower half. Shauna managed to scoot back and look down at her legs, which were twitching heavily. She could feel her every pore itching, so no doubt her legs were being covered in feathers by now as well…and if the feeling of a soft mass bunching up against the fabric of her pants didn’t prove it…then the sight of her pant legs shifting outwards as if a blanket had been stuffed up them surely did.
And it didn’t stop there, not at all. Shauna’s feet began to ache and stretch as three of her toes on each foot started to reform into sharp claws, causing the remaining two to entropy away. Shauna groaned in pain and pressed herself against the couch to try and alleviate some of the pain.
As her feet continued reshaping, Shauna could see three sharp lumps starting to push against the rubber of her sneakers. She whimpered again as she heard and felt her socks shred away. Now Shauna could feel as her growing talons struggling against every wall of her shoes.
And while all of that was going on, her heels narrowed and started to raise off the ground (which caused the main part of her shoes to snap away from her soles), and once that was done, a brand new digit began to sprout out from where her heels were. A thick and sharp spur which tore its way out of Shauna’s shoes. Lastly, below her knees, her leg bones started to tilt inwards and fuse partially with the bones in her feet, fully rendering her as digitgrade.
And not long after that, her shoes all but exploded, showing off Shauna’s brand new talons.
Shauna was briefly distracted by flexing the new extremities, but her attention quickly shifted to the sounds of tearing fabric stemming from her pants.
Shauna’s legs were beginning to thicken with muscle and masculinity just as her arms did, tearing through her pants like wet paper. Soon, all the ex-human was left with on her lower half was a pair of ragged shorts.
“Stop! STOP! STOP IT PLEASE!” Shauna cried to nothing in particular as she felt feathers sprout out of her midriff.
As the thick, fluffy plumage grew in, yet more muscle mass would pack itself onto her body, causing chiseled abs to etch themselves into her belly, and making her breasts shrink down into tough pectorals.
Shauna was able to stand up finally, and she nearly fell over as she tried to rapidly adjust to her new stance. Shauna thought about trying to run out the door and try and get help from a neighbor…but how the hell would she explain the fact that she was turning into a massive bird man?
And while she was pondering, Shauna failed to notice a pushing sensation at the base of her spine…and soon-
FRRRIP!
Shauna’s eyes widened as she felt three new appendages rocket out of her pants. She looked behind her as best as she could, and was met with three, long, elegant tail feathers. Each one was black with a white tip.
The last few changes would start soon after, with Shauna suddenly shooting up several inches in height. She ended up hitting her head on the low-as-fuck-ceiling of her apartment, and she was forced to get down on her knees in order to ‘stand’ comfortably. Unfortunately, this resulted in just a bit too much pressure being put on her shorts, and the waistband snapped, allowing the ragged clothing to fall to the floor. Shauna blushed in embarrassment despite being the only one in the apartment.
Mercifully, finally, the last change begun.
Shauna’s hair almost instantly transitioned into the same fluffy feathers that covered the rest of her now-muscular body before growing into a backwards-pointing crest of sorts. Soon after, her entire head would be covered in feathers as well -save for her face-.
Her face wouldn’t remain unchanged for long, though. Any and all color drained from her skin as it turned hard and almost plasticine. Any femininity also drained away as her features sharpened.
Next, her nose melded away until it was two mere slits, and then finally…her jaws began to painfully stretch out by multiple inches, ending in a straight, sharp point. Her face was now a beak.
“Hggh..nggh…Oh…Oh God…” As she spoke and grunted, Shauna noticed one more thing that changed: Her voice.
It was now deep and assertive, but not gravelly in the slightest. It was the voice of someone who was trained for years in grace and hospitality.
“I…Oh my God…d-did that crap turn me into-?”
But before Shauna had the chance to ruminate over what just happened to her, her phone suddenly started hissing and shaking. Shauna let out a crow-like caw of shock before turning around to face it.
And within an instant, the black screen of the phone started to grow and grow, then changed shape into a circle…and then it started to suck Shauna in.
“AAAAGH!” She screamed, trying to hold on to the arm of her couch. It wasn’t enough though, the portal was as strong as a black hole, and it wouldn’t be long before Shauna was sucked into it…
Shauna’s vision went black, and her hearing completely stopped….
~~~
Swatch’s eyes shot open, and he fell against the wall of his private quarters.
“Rggh…damn…” He huffed, rubbing his face. Immediately he tried to remember what he’d been doing prior to now…
“…Y-Yes! The boardgame! It-“ Swatch opened his eyes and then gasped.
He saw himself in a full-body mirror on the other side of the room. Big and bulky, dressed in his symmetrical black/white suit, complete with matching spats for his talons.
“O-Oh God…I really HAVE been turned into Swatch…” He racked his brain to try and recollect more things…
“Ugh! My name…what was my name before now?!” He growled. He knew he had a different name prior to discovering that boardgame…but now he couldn’t remember it at all. It was like it had just been completely wiped from his mind!
“Ugh…shit…” He huffed.
It looked like Swatch was going to have to live as well…Swatch for now…at least until he remembered his previous name and figured out how to go back home.
He managed to remember the bio that the manual provided, then repeated it to himself.
“Alright…’Swatch, the head butler at Queen’s palace. The leader of all the swatchlings. He is always prim, proper, and polite, commanding his subordinates with an air of elegance. His commanding presence demands respect from all who come across him. When he has spare time, he also runs the Color Café on the ground floor of the Queen’s Mansion.’”
Swatch took a deep breath as he looked at himself in the mirror.
“Okay…I can do this. I can be Swatch for a while…”
Swatch then stepped out of his room to begin the day proper…
~Several Months Later…~
The days passed on, and Swatch never really remembered his past name. But after a while he stopped caring about it. He fell into his life a lot quicker than he anticipated…and the more he carried out his duties in this new, odd world…the more preferable he found it to his old existence.
What did he do in his past life, after all? Take endless shit from others? Barely have enough to get by? Dive through dumpsters just for a little extra money?
Why would he ever want to return to that life? Here, he was respected. Here, Swatch could provide others with the type of fulfilling employment that he never had in the past. Here he could socialize, indulge in the finer things.
And after a while, Swatch stopped wanting to go back to his old life. Slowly but surely the memories of his old life receded into the back of his mind, where he hoped to never access them again.
And as Swatch stood on his balcony…looking over the beautiful city…sipping on a mice glass of butler juice…he sighed in contentment.
He stared over to the dark fountain in the distance, endlessly pouring into the sky…and held his glass up at it.
“Cheers.” He toasted.
