After a couple hours passed after sunrise, Kate and Zoww were well and truly on their way to Idaho. It was still morning, the rising sun’s light sending golden rays through the gaps in the forest that they strolled through. The hyena was only now realizing how truly out of his depth that he was. To him. It was like a less dense jungle, but with much cooler air. He knew so little about this new place, and his mind swam with ideas of what could be out here. All he knew was that it was the most beautiful place he’d ever seen, knowing full well he’d seen the splendor of Milele in its prime just before the famine.
Kate took notice of her new companion’s clearly awestruck expression and smiled, finding it oddly cute.
“They don’t have forests like this in Africa, do they? You look like you just entered Valhalla.” Kate pointed out with a chuckle.
“Valhalla?…. “ He tilted his head.
Kate smiled. “It’s part of old human and wolf culture. My ancestors came with humans across the eastern ocean from a far away place. Valhalla is where warriors go after they die. It’s a glorious place, or so I’ve been told in stories passed down from generations.” She shrugged.
Zoww blinked, still processing what he’d heard before he cleared his throat. “Interesting! Well in terms of this kind of place, we got jungles. Think like this, but it's all moist constantly, all the plants and trees are closer together and vibrant, and there’s snakes and monkeys everywhere. Not great when it comes to food.” He sighed and grimaced as the mention of eating anything made his ponderous belly let out a long, agonized rumble. “Ugh, I probably should’ve eaten before we tried to escape. I’m starting to miss the burgers and steak already.
Slowing to a stop, Kate looked the hyena over, almost impressed by how loudly his hunger was communicated. She’d spent her childhood hanging around much more overweight wolves like Mooch, and his stomach never got that loud when he was hungry.
“Well, thankfully your days of getting fattened up with processed garbage are over. Now you’ll be getting a taste of the Canadian carnivore diet. You’ll be as fit as me in no time.” Kate smirked, sticking her nose up and swaying her hair.
Zoww rose a brow at her. “I mean, that’s not saying much. No offense.” He motioned to Kate’s swollen belly, and she immediately huffed at him.
“Very funny. I at least have a valid excuse to be a little chunkier. Eating for four will do that. You my friend porked out on the greasiest crap imaginable. So think twice before making any more fat jokes, you’ll find that I can dish them out too.” Her eyes narrowed before she began to trudge forward again.
The plump hyena followed, now with a smirk plastered across his lips.
“Fine by me. I’m a hyena. If there’s one thing we love doing besides eating, it’s laughing.” He caught up to her side, only for Kate to stop again and wince. Not only did her stomach groan loudly too, but the pups wiggled around in concert with her sudden hunger pang.
“Hold on, little rascals are moving a lot. Guess we’re hungry too.” Kate sighed, pressing a paw up into her bump, trying her best to sooth the unborn wolves that swelled within.
“Well, that’s there to eat around here? I’m starving.” Zoww asked, looking around at their forested surroundings.
Kate regarded him, now finally having a reason to dump her wealth of knowledge on local fauna.
“The main source of food for us wolves is caribou. Large herbivore, hooved, big pointy antlers, but extremely rich with meat. There’s some species of deer too. Easier to bring down but not as big. That’s the best we can hope for with game. I am way too pregnant to be trying my luck with a caribou with just one other hunting mate. I’m nervous to even try with a buck. Besides, there’s still some rabbits about. Squirrels aren’t too hard, and they’re everywhere. Oh, can’t forget raccoons. They’ll be starting to bulk up for the winter. Oh, and-’ Kate was about to continue her craving influenced rambling, but Zoww raised his head and cut her off.
“Hold up, do you hear that?” Zoww narrowed his eyes, looking off to the west of their position. Kate soon heard it too. It was the unmistakable sound of water moving very quickly.
Kate nodded her head and took a few steps forward. “Yeah, that’s a river nearby, I think. But it’s too loud to just be the normal flow. Which means..” Kate trailed off and drew upon her memories of alpha training. It only took her a moment to remember what rushing water meant, and with that, she figured out what they’d be eating too.
“Rapids! That’s it!” Kate immediately began to trot off in the direction of the river. Zoww followed behind as best he could, but walking for so long left him already a little tired in his legs.
“Hold on, what are you talking about?” Zoww called to her.
Kate, through her smile, replied back, keeping her head forward, set on her goal. “There must be a waterfall or something. Perfect place for us to catch fish. This is perfect!” Kate cheered.
Soon they reached the edge of the forest tree line and Kate led the way out to the side of a river bank. The water was shallow and flowed quickly towards a cascade of waterfalls that led down into a wider river downstream. Kate stepped forward and waded into the water, where it reached up to just below her knees as the deepest. Looking down, past her grinning reflection, she could see small fish pass around her paws. They were numerous, and swimming against the current. Kate then lifted her head as she saw Zoww coming up to the edge.
“You know how to fish, right, Zoww? Because we got our breakfast right here!” Kate declared confidently.
The hyena nodded as he came to a stop just as his paws were about to get wet. “Yeah. My dad showed me how when food was starting to dry up. Long story, though.” Zoww said.
Kate nodded back. “Good, then you don’t need me to teach you that. The fish here can’t be too different than the ones in Africa. Just gotta focus…wait for the right moment…and..” Kate was about to take a snap at a fish right in range of her jaws, but Zoww gasped, and that was enough to distract her, missing her chance. When she looked up, Zoww was standing with his right side to the river, looking at his reflection.
“Wow..I knew I was putting on some weight but I didn’t think I’d gotten THIS fat!” He cringed as he pressed a paw up to his widened waistline, letting go again and again and watching the blubber wobble briefly with a muffled slosh. “I hardly recognize myself! It’s gonna take way more than a diet to shed all…this!”
Kate rolled her eyes. “Now you know how I feel when I’ve been looking at myself every so often, growing bigger and bigger each passing week. If it makes you feel better, I think it looks nice on you.” Some warmth came to her smile.
“You’re just saying that so I’m not so depressed about losing my figure. I’m not that broken up about it, really.” He said, looking back at himself, not quite believing his own claim.
“No, I mean it.” Kate said with a softer tone. “Some girl wolves love when a male looks healthy. Doesn’t always mean muscular. Some like their males huggable.”
Zoww looked at Kate and could see the flirtatious expression on her face. Whatever she was selling him, he was feeling tempted to buy, meaning she was making sense enough, though he still had reservations.
“But how is this healthy? I’m fat as a zebra after having a whole grove to itself!” He wiggled his hips and let his lard jiggle for emphasis.
“It’s not like you're obese. You’re just…plump. Chubby. What’s another word?...” Kate closed her eyes to think before they opened when Zoww thought of a word for her.
“Fat?” His brow rose.
“Ha! If that’s how you feel, then sure. Zoww the fat hyena has a ring to it. Not as good as plump though..” Kate looked back down and suddenly dunked her head under the current and pulled out a thrashing fish. She bit down hard and it went limp in her jaws before she waded her way back to shore, dropping her prey and beginning to eat it quickly.
“Your turn, big guy.” She said, motioning to the water.
Zoww smirked at the wolf before he waded in himself, looking down into the river. After finding a spot to focus, he bent his head down close. A silver streak started to move by his line of sight, and Zoww slammed his face into the current and bit down. He lifted his head, and he had a sizable trout in his mouth. He didn’t bother crushing the fish before he slurped the scaly thing down his gullet. Kate saw this and immediately looked up from her meal.
“Wow..” Kate breathed, seeing her new friend eat a fish whole like that.
Zoww fully got into it now that Kate was eating her own kill. He nabbed up several more, swallowing them down with gusto and very little effort. His already round stomach bumped out further with each fish he ate. Eventually, after not hearing any word from Kate, Zoww looked back to look at her, but Kate wasn’t there. He immediately blinked in surprise.
“Kate?? Where are you?” He was still looking at the river bank, when he should’ve been checking behind him.
Suddenly, Zoww felt a great weight crash into his shoulders and push him face first into the current. He fell over and rolled around to his back, just managing to keep his head above the water. Kate was already on top of him, letting out a playful growl as she leaned down to his face.
“Heh, gotcha. Never let your guard down, even when you’re eating.”
Zoww panted softly before and pressed his lips together in a pout and splashed water up into Kate’s face, making her retreat. “Don’t scare me like that!” He shook his lead and laughed softly, with Kate sitting on her haunches and doing the same.
“I’m surprised that I managed to do that as far along as I am. Still got the touch, eh?” Kate rested a paw on her belly, settling whatever movements her pouncing must’ve instigated.
Zoww shrugged as he upturned himself and sat down too. “You definitely got me. You’re a better hunter than I am, that’s for sure.”
“Maybe, but you got me beat in terms of eating fish. You were gulping them down like it was a berry eating contest. Impressive.” Kate complimented him. Which Zoww looked away bashfully in reaction.
“Wait.” Zoww looked back to Kate. “Wolves eat berries?” The hyena asked in disbelief.
Kate nodded her head. “Some of us do. I don’t really like them myself but Lilly eats them sometimes. We both agree though, nothing beats meat.”
Zoww nodded back, then smirked. “Speaking of…” He got on all paws and dunked his head down, pulling up another fish. Like what Kate did, he bit down until the fish stopped moving and offered it to Kate. This surprised her, but she accepted, taking the fish and with a deep breath and time to position it, she sent it down her throat with one gulp.
“Mmmm, thanks. I think we’re satisfied for now. You?” Kate tilted her head, noticing that Zoww’s gut stuck out slightly more in light of all that fish slurping he’d done. “Because from where I stand, you look like you ate the whole school.”
Zoww giggled. “I guess I did get a little carried away, huh? That’s how hungry I am anymore.” He bashfully chuckled, but then a churn shook through his gut and he embed the laugh with a sudden belch.
“URRP! Woah, excuse me.”
Kate leaned back and sneered. “Wow, okay fish breath. Let’s actually get some water before we hit the road, alright?”
“Eheh, sounds like a plan.” Zoww said, still flustered after burping like that.
The two of them then got out of the current and back to the river bank. Together they lined up side by side and began to lap up water. They took their time filling up and getting refreshed, as they hadn’t had a sip since they got out of the sanctuary. However, a noise from the other side of the river caused Kate to look up. What she saw made her shoot her head upwards in alarm. Zoww didn’t do the same until he heard a powerful snarl in front of him.
From the tree line and now wading into the water, a massive grizzly bear stared at the two, angered by their presence, hackles raised and snarls building up in its throat. It was a carnivore the likes of which Zoww had never seen. No lion he’d encountered ever even came close to being like the brown furred terror he was seeing now.
Wasting no more time, Kate nudged against Zoww and turned. “We have to go now! Come on! Run!”
Following after Kate, the overweight hyena dashed into the forest, leaving the river behind as the bear roared, now standing where they once were, It then turned and began to focus on the water, quickly forgetting about the two whom it just kicked out of the area.
They both ran for nearly a hundred meters until Kate slowed to a stop and panted, leaning her body up against a tree. Once again she rubbed her paw up into her belly as she caught her breath. Zoww joined her, promptly sitting on his haunches to calm his own shaken up digestion.
“I hate running after a meal. Oof. What was that thing??” He looked at Kate demandingly.
Kate huffed out and regarded him. “That was a bear. Apex predator in these parts. They love fish but they can take down moose if they’re desperate enough.” As she continued catching her breath, Zoww shook his head rapidly.
“What the heck is a moose??”
Kate sighed. “Think like a caribou, but much bigger. They’re the biggest animals around here. We’ll be lucky if we can find a dead one. We’d be set up for the rest of the journey. We can only hope, right?” Kate chuckled, forcing a smile.
“If you say so. Man that was scary. I hope we don’t have to run into any more of those anytime soon.” Zoww said.
Remembering her previous encounter with bears, she sighed. “Here’s hoping. They’re brutal and very short tempered, especially if they have cubs around. I even heard stories about bears far up north that hunt humans for food. Anyways, let's pick it up. We’re wasting time.” Kate grunted and pushed from the tree, waddling forward. Zoww followed behind, their time fishing lingering in his mind. Seeing her caught in the sun rays the forest was producing, Zoww was realizing the most beautiful thing in this new environment might just be right in front of him…
