finally, i have a map im super very satisfied and happy with! so this is Shalhavar, where as you know most of my characters live in, from the freezing cold, ice-built city of Alke, to the hot, swampy marshes of Frada, from the constantly bustling streets of Leiffon, to the quiet, grass fields of Nunard, there's lots of environments to choose from in this big country
of course, you can also just choose to become a 5-ton blob instead as well its ok

For some reason, your map loreposts always trigger the more RPG side of my interests. So many interesting and varied locales make me want a little road trip across all of them that may or may not end in killing god.
And then I remember the more likely and even better outcome of a full Shalhavar road trip: sampling the local cuisine in every corner until you’re city sized yourself.

This is incredible! I really admire going above and beyond for a fantasy map. I love that it looks like it's come out of a modern atlas, with the latitude and longitude showing the projection, and the slight grainy texture, as though it's been scanned from a book. The colours are so authentic as well, and all the geographic and demographic information is such a great realistic touch. I'm curious how you came up with the land area, population density and so on, was there a method to working that out, or is it just an estimate? I'd also be interested to know how you drew the map - did you start with a flat projection then adjust it onto a curve?
Regardless, amazing work, this sets such a high bar for fantasy map making!

thank you so much!!! the land area was honestly super hard to get right, that in itself creates a whole different process and stuff, so basically...:
first i made the map, of course, it's supposed to be viewed in a "natural" projection, like how this one looks, the gridlines are curved, and that's how it'd look from above because of the curvature of earth
then i set up some base coordinates, mainly the parallels (east to west), (you can see them in this map! although the gridlines in it are wrong)
so then i matched up google earth's (actually curved) gridlines to kinda "trace" them digitally, which made it more natural, ended up looking like, again, this new one
so then i had to manually distort the whole picture to match said gridline into an equidistant projection, (it ended up looking like this, you can see the distortion around the top parts), then drew in the rest of the whole world map (that is still an ongoing thing, shalhavar is kinda the main one..)
so once i had a "full" world map, i put it on a computer program called g projector, its actually a very cool program because you can display maps (and pictures in general) in different projections, no need for manual distortion
anyway, that part's out of the way, the actual land area was measured by overlaying said equidistant projection into google earth, and i used a measuring tool to trace the coastline and get a general area estimate, it is not perfect, but it's as close as it gets to accuracy
population, on the other hand, was just keysmashing numbers, 292 million is a lot, but it is still somewhat realistic for a country that size, density is just population divided by land area :^]

i forgot to mention!!! the original size was decided by me overlaying an earlier version of this map into google earth, but i had to set it up on the equator (it wasn't equidistant, so it would always distort greatly if i put it in either pole, so i made it *exactly* 15 degrees north and south, for a perfect 30° height, then i measured the width, and had to do a bunch of calculations i don't remember to translate that equatorial width to each of the longitudes i wanted, (it'd get wider the more north it got) but i didn't measure the height so that messed it up, so i distorted the pic and got the result that was the map with the wrong gridline, the "just overlay the google earth grid" idea came later
this remidns me alot on the map I made for my world build. except yours has so much more details with all those city names etc.
Map looks soooooooo good <3
Those details on the side are great too.
Makes me wonder how you made this thing. Not just the art but the choose of locations, sizes of locations gemometry numbers and so on.
