Hey all! I've been reading the Wings of Fire books and have been really enjoying them a lot. Already on book 10! I felt inspired by the books, and felt like drawing one of my favorite characters in the book series.
This is an artpiece of Glory using her Rainwing color-changing scales to camouflage. I thought it'd be a lot of fun to try and draw a convincing camouflage effect, and think I managed to pull it off pretty good. I shaded her solidly, then hid the body colors so my shading appears to be on a transparent character. That, plus a few other tricks, did it.
I hope you all enjoy my take on drawing a WoF dragon character. I tried to mix my style with their canonical anatomy, scale placement, and design.

For the camouflage, shaded her like normal at the start as a solid, green dragon. After I had a solid base set of layers for my shading, I turned off my base green color layer and then cut up pieces of the background, warped them a bit, and made them be my base color layer.

Thanks! It seemed like it'd be a fun thing to do. I had no idea if it'd come out well when I started. I just had seen in other artworks I've made, if I turn off my base color layer, it kinda looked ghostly and transparent. This art just gave me a reason to do it deliberately.
Same, even though I vibe more with Tsunami, which I find a bit funny as I too am a water dragon x3
But yes, the "cloaking" ability they have is such an important part of their lore and species yet I've never really seen it done before, while this one really highlights it. Made my day a little brighter :)

I just started reading Qibli's book. I think Moonwatcher was probably my favorite character / PoV in the second arc. I liked her personality a lot and really enjoyed seeing her Nightwing powers and what they were like from the first person perspective. I just got to the part where Qibli duplicated the earring and started distributing it at the school. That was pure genius, and I really enjoy his character and PoV as well. I'm really hoping he's the one who brings down all this animus schmanimus nonsense with Darkstalker by outwitting him and using the limited tools at his disposal as a (thankfully) REGULAR dragon. I'm rooting for him.
Oooh, do let me know what you think of it! Qibli is my "crush" in the books xD Over all I really like the 2nd arch, and I'm curious of what you'll think of the 3rd too. And then we have Dragonslayer too which is really neat too, and fills in an interesting part of Peril's background.
I loved book 10. Qibli’s antics with the earrings had me laughing out loud and I really enjoyed his Pov. His ventures with Winter were fun. I’d like to see more of Vulture as a bad guy too. I’m on book 13 now, so dragon slayer is next. I’ve sort of accidentally spoilered myself knowing Sky survives the drowning by Kestrel (maybe she let her go on purpose), and presumably is adopted by ivy. That should be fun to read. I like arc 3 so far. I love Blue as a character, and am also really liking watching the clash n point of view between him/cricket and Sundew.
Oh yeah I definitely agree. I can't browse DA on my phone without it glitching out and doing weird things. I do too also find FA shows me what people I've followed submitted more easily.
Last time I went to DA, I got fooled by an AI image and it upset me. I tend to stay away from there mostly nowadays, though I did post this picture to DA as well.

Now, I'm a fan of the books too, I'm reading them on stream with a voice-acting flair. But your piece really captures "DRAGON" for the characters. Is Glory your favorite or one of the other Dragonets of Destiny?

I'm really glad you like my work, and a lot of my own style did certainly show through even while drawing a character from WoF. Yeah, she's my favorite. It's why I chose to draw her. She grew on me a lot in books 3 and 4, and then continued being awesome in book 7. I like all the DoD characters, but like her the most of all.

I read on Saturdays, noon to 3pm Pacific local. But yeah, I really get fired up about dragon artists like yourself, want to see what wonderful things everyone makes and is up to.
I think a lot of people see me as some untapped talent too, but that's just because I have no time and energy to devote like others have. I struggle with that, haha. (Gaming is a blessing and a curse.)
So yeah, definitely seeing you stop by and drop a follow over my voice would be awesome. I really started my dragon artist feature section about diamonds in the rough, but hey, its not a constant, I think everyone should be praised. I bet a lot of my followers already know you... but it doesn't hurt to say, "I love what you made." Which I do. <3

Ooooo! I just watched a bit, and heard you say the fun word. Oubliette. Like something you'd eat at a fancy dinner party, rather than a horrifying dungeon cell. Did you have to practice that one? As soon as Qibli noted Cobra's breath I knew she couldnt've been in there for more than a day as part of a setup. Whew was I right on that one!

I do too! She quickly became my favorite character in book 3 (or maybe when she spit venom in Queen Scarlet's face...). I liked how she cared about rescuing the lost Rainwings and how she refused to give up on them, even when the Rainwing tribe wanted to just leave them there in captivity. Watching her challenge for the throne and then organize the Rainwings into leading a rescue mission was one of my favorite parts of the entire book series.
