I imagine this species as mostly solitary throughout the year and only meeting up to court during breeding season, with ruff sizes being the main distinguishing feature between sexes (females are slightly larger and heavyset than males and have a shorter ruff since they invest a lot of energy and nutrients when producing eggs). An iridescent (not shown here since it's flatcolors), undamaged ruff signals a healthy individual to potential partners.
