Original Species: Juggernaut Terrestrial Wyvern (ver. 3.0)
To the west of Vogelheim lies a thus far unexplored land called Shangrila. This recently discovered continent seems to be yet another land where evolution decided to be creative. This time, in the absence of True Dragons and dinosaurs, the major participants in the evolutionary arms race seem to be none other than Wyverns.
The Juggernaut Terrestrial Wyvern, or just "Juggernaut" for short, was the first species to be discovered on Shangrila.
Despite looking like a bulky drake, upon closer inspection, one can easily tell that his arms are vestigial wings, as indicated by the leathery membrane between the fingers.
Much like the brute wyverns of "Monster Hunter", this wyvern, along with its relatives, gave up on flying to become bigger and more defensive. The Juggernaut's tail is massive, covered in thick osteoderms, and seems to end in a mace-like tip, obviously used for attacking.
Its head is adorned with a pair of massive horns. Extended research and observation have proven that they are used both for fending off predators and in interspecies combat. Sharp spines, yet another defense measure against predators, go down this monster's neck.
The most surprising thing about the Juggernaut Wyvern is its teeth. They are leaf-shaped at the front of the mouth and flat at the back, by far not a feature typical of a predator. No. For some reason, this wyvern became a herbivore. A giant herbivore on top of that.
Further observations have revealed that the Juggernaut is more omnivorous than previously assumed. While chiefly herbivorous, these wyverns will eagerly go after small invertebrates (such as the Shangrigri). The reason for this is simple: extra protein. Male Juggernauts, especially, will gorge themselves on insects in the weeks before mating season, so that they can bulk up and stand a greater chance at winning against rivals.
Another behavior that has been recently observed is the consumption of bones and mineral deposits. The wyverns will use their horns and tails to crush bones from old carcasses and small mineral outcrops to add some additional calcium and iron into their diet. Juggernauts seem to have found more complex and clever survival strategies than previously assumed.
Further research uncovered that Juggernaut mothers are caring parents. They lay up to 3 eggs, which they guard for 5 months before the babies are ready to hatch. Once the babies are out in the world, the mother Juggernaut will devote 5 years of her life to protecting and teaching her offspring the art of survival in Shangrila.
Of final note is the range of individual variety within this one species. Each individual seems to be of a slightly different shade of green, with different stripe patterns and eye colors. This has proven very beneficial for following specific individuals and documenting their development over time.
(this is only the 2nd creature that I've made 3 design versions for... and again, it's a wyvern... this isn't becoming a trend, I swear)
