She thought they were her friends. They stole her out of the Silver Street brothel, a crime that could see them hanged, and what was she but another slave out of the thousands owned by the city? They brought her into the welcoming fold of the Revolution and they treated her like a real person instead of a possession. For the first time in her life she could believe that who she was actually mattered.
But, slowly, she began to learn the truth. The Revolution was bigger than anyone person, they said, but that was just an excuse. As it turned out, the last person to rent her services at the brothel was Richard Keppler, the son and heir of the Tyrant himself and now young Richard had taken an interest in her. This put her in a unique position to reach Marcus Keppler, Jaspertree's despotic President For Life, and to put an end to him.
It was a tempting idea. Marcus was the one who owned her, and Jess had long wanted a shot at giving him just what he deserved. The problem was, if she said yes, it would mean abandoning the only two people she had ever loved to a gruesome death. She knew her new friends wouldn't be happy with her refusal, but she wasn't prepared for the betrayal that followed.
Poor Jess. I just can't leave her happy for very long. I'm working on getting my second novel out guys, never fear.

I stole her title for this because it was too perfect. Do go and check her gallery out if you haven't already. Her art really is beautiful.

I was waiting to read the little story that would follow the picture. I do love how you always do that, it adds so much to the drawing, the character, the story!!
Gahhh wish i could read Jess's story, and Cassandra's as well, i really love her too!... <3
But i really have to focus on this little writing/illustrating collaboration that i've been working out with a friend, it has to take all my spare time if i want it to be perfect. If you're looking for a good read check him out!

I know I'm not getting anything like the full effect thanks to being so far behind with reading your stories, but even as a standalone picture I think this is really very well done. It's possible to make up a little backstory for the character that could explain why she's looking and behaving like that. The earth tones give it quite a sombre look, though I do think Jess herself has a little bit of a glow of spirit to her, which stops it being a purely grim picture.
I wonder, when I've finally read the relevant fiction, how will I feel about what I've just written? I suppose that will have to wait until it actually happens!

Well, actually, except for a teaser chapter, and a stand-alone short story, Jessamine's story hasn't been posted anywhere on-line. I've been selfishly keeping it to myself in hopes of getting it published on paper. So it probably isn't fair for me to get pictures like this in the first place. But
maria-mar did a fantastic job of capturing the mood I was looking for. It is a rather grim picture, but you're right that Jess is supposed to still have enough spirit to stop it from being completely bleak and hopeless.
