I know Matthew set this up to be something big and bad and scary because that's what his past experience has told him (at least from his own perspective) but I can't help the feeling that his dad was impressed during that initially confrontational meeting/awkward car ride, developed a better picture of who Roberto is, and now genuinely thinks he might be good for his son.
Matthew changed quite drastically from the start of the comic to now and his dad has to have noticed at least some of that change. Now he knows part of the reason behind that positive change and seems to be trying to create a good environment for that to continue.
