A beautiful and dreamy silver haired young woman occupies the central place in the painting and everything around her; the marble bench and floor, a peacock fan, flowers and the sea in the background all serve to accentuate the idleness and luxury that she is oozing. She is lazing around on a sunny summer day and has the luxury to do so; daydreaming and allowing the minutes and hours to pass by without any guilt or concern, for being idle is not a crime. Gorgeous masses of her silver and purple hair are seductively falling over her head, her large blue eyes are full of desire and dreams and her flushed cheeks speak of desires unspoken in words. She seems to exist on a diet of sunlight’s caresses, sweet summer wines and thoughts of love. The curvy line of her body stretched on soft silks is as seductive as the yellowish line that separates the azure blueness of the sea from that of the sky. so i actually looked it up because i wasn't sure!
here is what i got:
When the Heart is Young illustrates the lure of the Mediterranean: the long curving lines of the model’s body resting against a leopard pelt are echoed in the tops of the Ischian isles along the horizon line..... The palette of the toga’s pink fabric, bound by golden ribbons and pale blue stola, is repeated in the beautifully-studied poppies blooming in a garden plot. The inclusion of flowers is one of many compositional elements that point to the Victorian interest in the revival of Classicism and ancient Rome, prevalent at the beginning of the twentieth century, which favored form and beauty over visual narrative. In Greco-Roman mythology, the red poppy symbolized forgetfulness, sleep, and resurrection, and was said to grow along the banks of the river Lethe as it entered Hades.
