an actual race system would be pretty good on fire emblem(instead of having races as classes like manakete), humans would probably have a good all around attributes while avians could have more speed but less strength(and magic perhaps), if they can fly then they could also have more resistance but less defense than humans, shapeshifting races could have lesser attributes than other races but they would get lots of boosts once transformed.
didnt play those two games but im guessing that those classes got outclassed by normal classes on late game, the idea ive mentioned is to have races as a different characteristic from classes( human fighter, avian fighter, manakete fighter, etc), this way characters would have two combinations of characteristics to choose from(race and class), maybe races could even have their own skills too.
