there's a sadness to this that won't leave me alone. it's such a happy concept, but everything about this makes me feel like it's a reason to cry.

That sad aspect could be because the smile is quiet, the eyes are focused on something/somebody and the setting might be early fall (flying leaves and the dress colors and style). Fall has a melancholy feeling for many.

I think so. The color palette of the background feels comforting, but somber. And her expression looks really.. I guess, exhausted, but trying to push through it and be happy, or at least carefree.
I haven't really looked at Sleepy Lake other than the bits and pieces here and there, but it's stuff like this that really resonates with me.

The earlier story line of Sleepy Lake is both disturbing in some ways but having empowering aspects. It explores many aspects of the callousness and self-serving parts of various personalities while showing how the main character deals with that. I really would like to see more of the story line as this seems to cover some of the negative parts of the real world without it being purely depressing.
