The bowl steamed gently in her hands, its warmth seeping into her fingers like a quiet apology for everything the world had taken. She took a slow sip, letting the broth coat her throat and dull the sharpness of the day.
Her communicator buzzed. Once. Then again. She glanced down at the cracked screen, it was Kaizeh, reporting back from the rooftops with a scan readout and some kind of tech chatter about interference signals and unusual heat blooms. Heziak stared at it for a second longer than necessary. Then flicked the message aside and lifted her bowl again. “You can handle it,” she muttered under her breath. “I’ve got a date with noodles.”
