Things in mountainous terrain echo in odd ways. I actually got the idea for this because I wasn't sure, one day, if the loud noise I heard was thunder, an aircraft engine, or an explosion.
Incidentally, there's a quarry near here, and they occasionally use explosives to break out more rock.

Explosions in the distance can easily be passed off as thunder. Especially when there are a series of explosions in a short time. Just as in a war zone, thunder can be mistaken for explosions.
We tend to classify sounds within a subset of what we know and expect.
There is the issue of counter-battery radar and return fire.
