As some of you might have noticed, my avatar has changed a number of times over the last half year. Why? Well why not? My reason was that I get tired of staring at the same of image week after week -- and you probably did too. It’s not like it is your trademark or an identification sign. If it were then why aren’t you placing it, instead of that illegible squiggle of a signature, on your submitted artworks?
1. This was an avatar largely designed for the Christmas-Holday season with a leaning towards the fantasy with the elf crown.
2. Spring was in the air and so a backwards baseball or skate rat’s cap. Besides, with that red it was colorful.
3. Royalty struck me and, like Napoleon did in real life, I crowned my self.
4. Being a history buff I donned the cap of a 4-star general and led my bomber squadrons over enemy territory (note none of he bombs actually hurt anyone, just made very loud and scary noises).
5. A return to my hippy days with a red bandana, dude.
6. I took the plunge and donned scuba gear for this avatar. A perverse part of me wanted to have the dim outline of Bruce, the mammoth shark from the movie “Jaws” in the background, but my sanity triumphed and Bruce did not make an appearance.
7. My tribute to a very brave man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a German army officer and Catholic aristocrat who made an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler and end the Nazi Party’s power in Germany.
8. Not decided yet. Distinguishing hats that mean something to most people and are fun to look at (without ridicule) are a little difficult to imagine up. Stay tuned.

Arrrgggghhhh!!!! You've touched upon my secret dread -- my yearly Christmas Card! Luckily I have several "attempts" left over from previous years and so I can really continue working on one of them in the next month or two. I hate having to scramble to finish my "card" with only one or two days before Christmas.
No personal reason or pattern. Mostly some degree of interest in those areas -- that and familiarity with the hat or gear. Mostly random. Number 7 however was done intentionally to honor a very brave man.
Thanks for the kind words, Susi, and as long as you and your fellow watchers get a measure of interest or enjoyment out of my changing avatars, then my purpose is served.

I didn't know Stauffenberg was Catholic. I saw the movie Valkyrie nd that was the first I'd ever heard of him, but truly a great man who risked everything to try to destroy a great evil. Wonderful tribute, and thanks for sharing that little extra there. Some cool looking avatars there.

Kudos for recognizing the name and what the man did, Matthias.
Even though the coup ultimately failed, having made the effort (and paying the price for making it), it marked Stauffenberg as an honest-to-goodness hero worthy of being remembered on both sides of the Atlantic. It seems that today we have so very few heroes who live by honorable values and who are willing to sacrifice themselves for those values. That was my purpose in creating that version of my avatar. Besides that, I think that my fursonna looks cool in a military uniform.

It is sad that we do not seem to have any real heroes anymore. WE idolize sports stars or movie stars, but half the time those people aren't worth it; they don't have a real heroic bone in their body. Folks like Stauffenberg should be better known because they are heroes. Thank you for doing your part.
And yes, you do look awesome in military uniform.
