This was a text post to Bluesky before I remembered I'm a cartoonist, and I USED to draw this kind of stuff straightaway in my sleep. Tells you how out of sorts I've been.
Anyway, a follow up to this old journal.
I have virtually no interest in either genre other than a handful of peripheral examples (I don't consider Transformers or Legend of Zelda to be particularly...accurate representations of their genres)...games, movies, TV, shrug?
Hence Class Menagerie/i.s.o./FRWL all being contemporary settings, thanks!

I've always been very picky about scifi/fantasy. There is the occasional piece that tickles my fancy, but most of it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.
"What if we lived like we do now but we were all animals?" was one of the questions that got me to seek out the fandom to begin with.

You may have inadvertently touched on one of the things people like about sci-fi and fantasy- all of the dangers present in modern life don't exist there. Yes, there are entirely new dangers, but they're fictional and often solvable. Sometimes, they're even allegories for modern problems.
Both genres are also quite broad. Urban fantasy is a thing. And my favorite sci-fi series has an astronaut lost [shot through a wormhole] in some distant part of the universe.
I will admit that Zelda may not be a good representation of fantasy because Nintendo drapes the story over the gameplay.

Okay, you're actually probably right about the sci-fi deal, I suppose you don't get hit by trucks there. Fantasy--no, not at all. They're there, and they're WORSE, cuz you don't have modern electronics or medicine. The spiders alone would cause me to kill myself, because YOU CAN'T BUY A CAN OF RAID. I'm not hiring a mage every time one invades my room, which is constantly because there's no modern construction. OMG, teh hubby told me why canopy beds exist, and I was horrified. See what I'm getting at?
Notably, spiders likely wouldn't be a problem in sci-fi...
Technically ANYTHING unrealistic can count as "fantasy" by mere definition of the word. ie furries of any genre, really. But I'm specifically referring to...huh, I guess I don't know what ACTUALLY defines the fantasy genre...but let's just say the stuff Peter Jackson and Game of Thrones popularized.
Nintendo doesn't even have the guts to call Hylians as elves or whatever the heck they clearly are!

I agree with you about fantasy being worse. It's almost always handwaved away in fantasy stories, but sanitation in medieval times was practically nonexistent.🤮
Somewhat tangentially related to this discussion, you really should give Farscape a try if you haven't already.
Medieval fantasy may be the best way to describe what you're thinking of.
There's constant debate in the sci-fi and fantasy communities about what counts as either genre. (it's almost like nerds love to argue.) Some of them would say Transformers is fantasy because it's not primarily about humans and our technology.
Nintendo calling their elves Hylians may be more of a business thing since they can trademark Hylian.

You know something? When I first got into the furry genre, it was thanks to series like Redwall and Mistmantle and the like, where the characters were in medieval/fantasy-type settings, and that's how I viewed the genre for the longest time. Then at some point, I came across other furry stories that were set in more contemporary times, and I realized just how unlimited it all was. :D
Either way, you do you, buddy! I love your comics just the way they are. x3
