Urchin Krabs (born May 11) is one of the main characters in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. He is a young, gothic teenage whale who lives in a hollow anchor with his father, Eugene H. Krabs and his younger sister, Pearl Krabs. When Urchin grows up, Mr. Krabs wants him to continue the family business by inheriting the Krusty Krab and becoming its owner. He is voiced by TJ Miller. The in-universe difference in species between Urchin, Pearl and Mr. Krabs has never been addressed, but the official trivia book states that Urchin and Pearl take after their unseen mother, who was also a whale. The late Stephen Hillenburg was strongly against revealing the identity of Pearl's mom and kept it a secret throughout the show and as such, it is kept a secret here.
Personality
Just like real sperm whales and his sister, which have the biggest brain size of any extant species on Earth, Urchin's brain is the largest out of all the Bikini Bottom residents. He is skilled in math, which is why Mr. Krabs would like it if he would also became a bookkeeper for his restaurant. However, he is still young and has not matured yet, so he spends most of his time and money at the mall.
Urchin is very different than his sister Pearl. He is gloomy, naive, well-meaning, and low-spirited. He wants nothing more than to sit in his room or just talk on his phone, but this is impossible to do because he is literally the biggest teenage boy in the ocean. He is often hangs with gloomy or "gothic" kids at school.
Urchin is a huge fan of Goth Whale, Mecha Baleen and The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, but does not want any of his classmates at Bikini Bottom High School to know about his interests. Whenever Urchin is dragged into whatever situation his father or situations that include him in, he always complains and wants to just go home or text on his phone the whole time not paying much attention to ensuing chaos around him. He still tags along regrettably only to make his family and friends happy. Other people often see him as "scary" but he can be kind-hearted if need be.
Aside from being skilled in math, Urchin's talents include writing poems, playing the saxophone, and playing the piano. He is rarely ever not without his phone which he seems to have an addiction to like a typical teenager. Being a whale, he shakes the ground whenever he runs or jumps and endangers whoever is in the same building as him. However, he does never seem to notice this and Mr. Krabs thinks he is very talented.
Urchin is normally gloomy, unlike his father, who can be crabby at times. Episodes contrast Urchin's attitude with Mr. Krabs' bitterness due to his old age.
Ironically, Urchin's favorite food is fruit salad, despite how sperm whales are the largest toothed predator currently on Earth. He also likes tea and Krabby Patties. He usually has Kelpo cereal for breakfast. "One Coarse Meal" reveals that Urchin, like Pearl does not eat plankton. This makes sense because toothed whales do not eat plankton; baleen whales do.
Since Urchin is a whale and mammals have lungs, he needs air to breathe. It is revealed in "Bubble Troubles" that he holds air in his nose in order to breathe when underwater. In order to get air to his lungs, he regularly goes to the water's surface and breaches. It is revealed in "Bossy Boots" that Mr. Krabs taught him how to breach.
Urchin's favorite place to visit is the Bikini Bottom Mall. He is the opposite of his father when it comes to spending; Mr. Krabs wants to save every penny he earns and is very cheap, but Urchin loves to spend big amounts of cash on dark or gothic things and often finds trips to the mall with Pearl "boring" and "cringe"
Despite Urchin's huge brain and mathematical knowledge, he's still a kid and can be childish at times. Urchin always complains so much that even Squidward finds it annoying. SpongeBob tries to change Urchin's tune about life and find other things than "dark and scary stuff"
Urchin can get overdramatic and very emotional at times. A running gag is that whenever Urchin is upset, like Pearl he will cry literal rivers of tears. This often results in flooding the Krusty Krab or whatever building he is in; as a matter of fact, the Krabs house has drain plugs built into the floors so the rooms can be emptied after Urchin cries or spouts water from the blowhole on his head. Whenever Mr. Krabs hears Urchin crying, he often says "Thar he blows!" or "Batten down the hatches!" as a warning to take cover from Urchin's crying.
Occupation
Urchin works as an assistant at Scorched Coral, a store he feels "at home" in and where he's dating Nocturna. When he grows older, Urchin will inherit the Krusty Krab from his father and become the owner. Until he grows up, Urchin holds various occasional positions at the restaurant. It is shown in "Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle" that Urchin and Pearl manage the Krusty Krab whenever Mr. Krabs cannot. In these situations, he takes over both SpongeBob and Squidward's jobs, cooking Krabby Patties and serving them to customers. He has his own Krusty Krab employee hat, spatula, and cook apron. Urchin occasionally fills in for SpongeBob as the Krusty Krab's fry cook. Some customers state though, they find Urchin "creepy and weird" but "better than Squidward"
Residence
Urchin lives in an anchor with his father and sister at Mr. Krabs and Pearl's house in Bikini Bottom. While most of the house has wooden walls and a nautical theme, Urchin's bedroom is very different from the rest of the rooms in terms of appearance. The walls are dark colored with various gothic themes. His room is on the top floor of the house, which is an absurd decision on Mr. Krabs' part because Urchin is so heavy and has broken through his room's floor before. His room is also next to Pearl's
There are many photos of Urchin throughout the house, in addition to some of the generic sperm whales whose relation to the Krabs family are unclear. One of the paintings shows a sperm whale of normal size swimming under a boat. Another shows a pink-red Mr. Krabs next to a green Urchin.
Biography
Urchin was born to Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Krabs. On the day he was born, Mr. Krabs bought a celebration banner on sale. It had the words "it's a girl" on it, so he crossed girl out to write boy. Urchin has had the same bed, which his father got for $30, ever since he was a newborn. He has since decorated it in a gothic fashion.
When Urchin was a baby, he was dramatically smaller than Mr. Krabs, and only had one little strand of hair. He had a single tooth. Around the time he was a baby, his father took him to his summer camp, Kamp Koral, where he took care of him for the summer. As a toddler, Urchin gained a full head of hair, but was still shorter than his father. He grew taller than Mr. Krabs when he became a teenager. Even taller than Pearl due to being male.
Throughout his early childhood, Urchin was always babysat by Squidward Tentacles. He calls him "Uncle Squiddy." He is not actually his uncle, but an honorary one (this title is often given by a parent of a child to a close family friend, like Squidward is to Mr. Krabs). At a young age, Urchin acted in Patrick's variety show.
At one of Urchin's earliest birthday parties, all of his guests had to share one balloon. At a later birthday party, Mr. Krabs performed a song called "Urchin's Me Son" and gave Urchin a pair of squeaky fishing boots that he later handed down to SpongeBob. On the day afterwards, he got him a pair of flipper slippers. On Urchin's 15th birthday, Mr. Krabs passed out paper clips as party favors. Urchin turns 17 in "Whale of a Birthday For Two."
Rather than enrolling Urchin in Mrs. Puff's Boating School, Mr. Krabs taught Urchin how to drive a boatmobile himself. He figured it would be too expensive to send him to Mrs. Puff's school since it costs $100 per semester.
Urchin has attended Bikini Bottom High School for a long time. He's the tallest student by far and all of his peers know him, but he's popular and does have a steady group of friends a stark contrast to Pearl. At one point, Urchin had braces. He had to visit the "orca-dontist" (an orthodontist for whales) when he first got them.
Urchin has been on the high school art squad for at least two years. His father thinks he is the "best little artist in the seven seas."
In the future, Urchin will graduate from high school and go off to college. His father desperately wants him to attend college, because if he doesn't, he'll never leave home and he'll have to support Urchin for the rest of his life. After he finishes college, Urchin will inherit his father's fortune and the Krusty Krab. Once he becomes the restaurant's owner, Urchin will assume all of the duties Mr. Krabs usually fulfills. Urchin is nervous about his future and never want to dismay his father. However, he doesn't share his interest in fast food management and would rather not work at the Krusty Krab while he's still young.
Urchin celebrates many holidays every year, mainly Christmas, Halloween and Parents Day. Every Christmas, he gets gifts from Mr. Krabs, such as succulents for his room, and hairspray. On Halloween, he has dressed up as a warlock and as Frankenstein. Urchin usually fears having to celebrate Parents Day because his father is so awkward.

Mother
Urchin and Pearl's mother, Mrs. Krabs, was another sperm whale who married Mr. Krabs long before "Help Wanted." Pearl and Urchin are the biological offspring of this whale and Mr. Krabs, and as stated in SpongeBob SquarePants Trivia Book, they simply take after their mother rather than their father.
Photos of Pearl and Urchin's early life seen in "Selling Out" hint that Mrs. Krabs was not around when Pearl and Urchin were babies. The pictures all show Mr. Krabs taking care of Pearl and Urchin alone. As seen in "Bossy Boots," Mr. Krabs had to teach Pearl and Urchin important whale skills such as breaching all by himself.
Relationships
SpongeBob SquarePants
Urchin and SpongeBob are good friends, but their relationship is more complex than that. It's unknown when SpongeBob met Urchin, and their first encounter has never been shown or described. "The Chaperone" is the first instance they interact in the series, but they are already familiar with each other. Urchin likes dark and gloomy things while SpongeBob always looks at the positive things. Urchin's interests and way of speaking first creeped out SpongeBob first, but he grew on him as a friend despite their differences.
Other episodes show a running theme of SpongeBob going to extreme measures just to help Urchin. He is often even friendlier to Urchin than he is to Mr. Krabs, in spite of his undying loyalty to his boss. In "Barnacle Face," SpongeBob makes it his mission to rid Urchin of barnacles growing on Urchin's face.
SpongeBob similarly takes drastic means to make Urchin happy in "Whale of a Birthday" when he buys millions of dollars worth of presents for his birthday.
When SpongeBob visits Pearl's dream in "Sleepy Time," he's having a rock concert party and wants him to join him. When SpongeBob says he actually meant to enter Mr. Krabs' dream instead, Urchin becomes visibly sad but continues to play. In "Hooky," SpongeBob's clothes get torn off when he ignores Mr. Krabs' orders not to play on hooks in Fish Hooks Park. He's splattered onto the translucent doors of the Krusty Krab without any clothes on and in front of Urchin, Pearl and their friends. To his embarrassment, Pearl obviously likes seeing him like this, since her eyes widen, she laughs at him, and she says "It's SpongeBob NudeyPants! Urchin has a different reaction covering his face with his flipper."
A running gag in many episodes is that Urchin will be reluctant to do something with SpongeBob, or situations involving him, Mr. Krabs or other characters only to end up admitting that he had a lot of fun. Often, he becomes afraid that SpongeBob's spontaneity will cause trouble, only for his quirkiness to help him in the end. Urchin, like Pearl cares for SpongeBob a great deal.
Eugene H. Krabs
Mr. Krabs is Urchin's father. They share a close bond and, although it's not always apparent, love each other very much.
In "The Chaperone," Mr. Krabs is shown to care deeply for Urchin's high school career. Mr. Krabs expresses great gratitude for SpongeBob's help with Urchin. After Urchin explains how much fun he had, Mr. Krabs winks at SpongeBob and says, "Good job, laddie."
Because Mr. Krabs is rather old, Pearl and Urchin often have to take care of him. They make his breakfast, which usually consists entirely of bran products, every morning. Pearl also has to hand-feed Mr. Krabs his daily pill, which is oversized and even wider than his body.
Mr. Krabs' relationship with his son is mainly tainted by one thing: his relentless cheapness, which can cause trouble between them. Mr. Krabs even finds Urchin's dark interests odd and creepy and often tries to get him to switch to more "light-hearted" things but Urchin always refuses in a bossy kind of way.
Mr. Krabs is also far too overprotective of Urchin, especially when it comes to letting him hang out with friends. He is concerned for both his well-being and what he does to his house and wallet. "The Slumber Party" best exemplifies how excessive he can be when it comes to protecting Urchin. On the night of Urchin's slumber party, Mr. Krabs creates a long list of rules that will keep him and his money safe. The most important one is "no girls allowed," since he fears the seemingly destructive nature of teenage girls. Mr. Krabs sends SpongeBob to spy on Urchin to make sure he doesn't get into any trouble, but his employee (the only boy at the party) ends up destroying the Krabs residence himself. To make it up to Urchin, he pays for an expensive beach party hosted by Pearl at Goo Lagoon.
While Mr. Krabs was in the navy and loves everything about being a pirate, Urchin doesn't share his interest in sailing. He doesn't know much about pirates or what they look like, as shown in "Grandpappy the Pirate" when Urchin mistakes his father's pirate outfit for a funny costume. This is ironic, because whales have been strongly associated with seafaring throughout history whereas crabs have not been nearly as prominent in sailor folklore. Instead, Urchin prefers dark, and gothic things and keeping his room dark at all times.
"One Coarse Meal For Three" shows a very strange side of Mr. Krabs' relationship with Urchin; when he discovers that Plankton has developed a fear of whales, Mr. Krabs pays Urchin to scare Plankton once again. He then uses an Urchin costume to regularly frighten Plankton and drive him insane. While he's doing this, it's revealed that he can imitate Urchin's voice perfectly (either because he knows exactly how he sounds or because the voice runs in the family) and that he's able to make a lifelike Urchin mask.
Urchin, like Pearl can get embarrassed by his father's miserliness, but deep down, he loves him for who he's and would never want him to change.
Urchin also like Pearl always looks out for Mr. Krabs, no matter what. He always makes sure he's protected and at any point, he injures himself he often freaks out, but once Mr. Krabs assures him he's fine, then he feels fine.
Squidward Tentacles
Squidward is Urchin and Pearl's honorary uncle, since he is not related to the Krabs family by lineage or marriage. Pearl and Urchin call him Uncle Squiddy. They don't like being seen with each other, However, they have quite a lot in common. Squidward calls him a drama queen. Urchin corrects him with the opposite gender form of drama king and thinks Squidward is a barnacle, since he doesn't like to have fun like SpongeBob. Both Urchin and Squidward have similar personalities as they are often sullen and don't care about things going on around them.
They may share interests, but Urchin and Squidward's demeanors are almost polar opposites of each other: Urchin is gothic and bossy, whereas Squidward is usually grouchy and quiet. Squidward even finds Urchin's room a little creepy.
Deep down, Urchin deeply cares about Squidward. He decides to do something nice for his Uncle Squiddy by getting him a pretty house plant to cheer him up. He also revels in pranking Squidward like Pearl.
Patrick Star
Patrick is a friend of Urchin, though there hasn't been major interaction between them. He's sad and cries when SpongeBob tells him that, if they spend their lives on the outskirts of Bikini Bottom, there'll be "no more Sandy or Pearl, Urchin or Mr. Krabs" in "Life of Crime." Urchin makes a Krabby Patty for him in "Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle Part 2." He says to SpongeBob while eating it, "Urchin doesn't make 'em as good as you do, though."
In SpongeBob Comics, Mrs. Puff gives Patrick a flower that makes him fall in love with the next person he sees. When he sees Pearl, he tells her "I love you!" Pearl reveals that she likes him, but not in "that way." Patrick also has a crush on the mermaids, who are good friends with Pearl. The mermaids reject Patrick and call him creepy in "Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle," whereas they befriend Pearl because she shares their love of collecting things.
In Dancing with the Star, Pearl is the judge of a dance contest that Patrick enters. Patrick is very nervous about his performance, but the training SpongeBob gave him pays off and he shows Pearl his impeccable dancing skills. Pearl gives him a perfect score of 10 and Patrick wins the contest.
When asked why Urchin's species is different from his father's, Patrick answered: "Urchin's a whale?" This shows that Patrick is so clueless that he doesn't even realize he's a different animal from Mr. Krabs.
Plankton
Urchin has a very strange relationship with Plankton. In "The Algae's Always Greener," Plankton uses an invention to switch lives with Mr. Krabs. As a result, he becomes the father of an alternate universe Pearl and an alternate universe Urchin called Pearl Plankton and Urchin Plankton respectively. With no idea how to raise two children, he gives them one measly dollar as an allowance. Later in the episode, this version of Urchin calls Mr. Krabs' alternate universe counterpart (who assumes Plankton's life) the "saltiest of all the sea dogs" as an insult, implying that the normal Urchin and Pearl view Plankton as this.
The episode "One Coarse Meal For Three" disregards Urchin and Plankton's previous interactions. Although they are still familiar with each other in the episode, Plankton is said to have a fear of whales like Pearl and Urchin since they eat plankton. Plankton's fear is actually irrational and erroneous, since baleen whales eat microorganisms, not toothed sperm whales like Pearl and Urchin. Sperm whales do, however, eat cephalopods like Squidward. In this episode, Plankton becomes so scared of Pearl and Urchin that Mr. Krabs uses this knowledge to scare him. Plankton even has a fear-induced nightmare about a zombie Pearl and Urchin chasing and eating him. This fear is retconned in later episodes and is never brought up again.
In "Married to Money," Plankton disguises himself with a robotic stack of dollars called Cashina in a plan to trick Mr. Krabs into marrying his faux alter-ego. In order for his scheme to work, he needs to get Pearl and Urchin to like Cashina as well. Pearl and Urchin are strongly against getting a new mother, so when Plankton comes over to dinner as Cashina, they voice their disapproval. Plankton tries to complement Pearl's rouge and shoes, and Urchin's fashion sense but it backfires because her rouge is actually a rash and her shoes are just barnacles and Urchin just rolls his eyes. 'Cashina' eventually wins them over by having a funny conversation about experiences Cashina supposedly had in the past.
Plankton has manipulated Urchin in the past, only for his plans to be foiled like always, sending Plankton flying to the Chum Bucket.
Karen
Urchin and Karen share a good relationship and consider each other friends. Very similar to Pearl and the latter.
Sandy Cheeks
Urchin and Sandy share a mutual friendship because they're both mammals and Urchin believes that mammals need to stick together no matter what.
Mrs. Puff
Urchin is on good terms with Mrs. Puff, which is a good sign for the romantic relationship between Urchin's father and Mrs. Puff. However, Urchin is one of the very few characters who can drive but didn't attend Mrs. Puff's Boating School. Instead, Mr. Krabs taught Urchin how to drive a boat himself to save money.
Trivia
Urchin has ventral pleats on his neck, but these are not found on sperm whales. Only baleen whales have them.
Urchin has never been arrested so far in the series, therefore he has never been seen in jail.
Since Urchin is a whale, and mammals have lungs, he needs air to breathe. He holds air in his nose to help his breathe when he's underwater.
Mr. Krabs never told his grandfather Redbeard Krabs about Urchin until "Grandpappy the Pirate," in which Redbeard mistakes Urchin for a sea warlock.
Urchin's teeth are usually flat and square-shaped, unlike the teeth of real sperm whales which are pointed. He is occasionally seen with more realistic pointed teeth
