The submarines of the 705 and 705K Lira projects (NATO classification - "Alfa") were developed in the USSR in the late 1950s with the aim of creating highly automated and high-speed nuclear submarines. The Project 705 submarines were designed to destroy submarines, combat surface ships and transports.
Main characteristics:
Displacement: about 2,300 tons on the surface and about 3,180 tons underwater.
Maximum speed: up to 41 knots underwater.
Crew: 32 people.
Features:
The use of titanium alloy for the hull, which reduced the magnetic field and increased maneuverability.
Comprehensive automation, allowing control of all systems from the central post.
A pop-up rescue chamber, ensuring the rescue of the entire crew in an emergency.
Despite their unique advantages, the submarines had a relatively short career due to difficulties with basing and operational issues. However, they had a significant impact on the development of the submarine fleet and forced potential adversaries to develop a new generation of anti-submarine weapons.
It should be especially noted that during the 20 years of operation on ships of this project, not a single person was lost in the fight for survivability.
