This is the first tail I've made, and I'm pretty happy with it. Yes, it's big, and I love it that way!
It's just long enough to bump when I walk down stairs or off curbs but not long enough to drag normally, even if I jump or bounce.
The fur was bought at Beverly's Fabrics, a local store, and is pretty soft. I have quite a bit left over. I used three pieces of 3" foam to form the shape of the tail and it holds its shape really well, it isn't floppy. The foam makes it quite lightweight and solid. The counterbalance makes it feel much heavier when it's on.
