Also their eyes and teeth remind me a lot of fuu dogs and they did jump into a statue...I wonder if they're based off a kind of statue?

i think the crooked fangs are a reference/connection to demons, a lot of their designs have that kind of teeth :o, otherwise it appears the goofy tiger (and bird) is a very popular old folklore thing? cool stuff
