A commission ordered by
raagn for
ki-kun birthday.
Reuploaded the artwork because the previous one was removed due to AI usage.
If anyone’s curious — the only AI-generated part was the window in the background. It has now been redrawn by hand.
You can still see the version with the AI-made window HERE or HERE and feel free to reflect on the current realities and the role of AI in them — as well as where I went wrong. Obviously, I won’t let situations like this happen again.
I confess my sins to the FA community 🙇
For those who are somehow still reading this, I’ll add a bit of information about my experience with art. Originally, I’m a traditional artist.
I can create in any traditional art techniques — from sculpture and stained glass to massive oil paintings, with stretcher bars that I crafted by hand myself.
At 14yo, I discovered that you could draw on a computer using a mouse, and that’s when I really started actively working digitally. Since then, I have been known as the artist LLDelphin. For the past five years, I have worked in game development, and as soon as AI appeared, it was immediately introduced into our production pipeline to speed up the image creation process. Honestly, when AI first came out, I fell into a deep depression because I understood that the art market was changed forever, partly due to the unfair theft of artists’ work worldwide. Making a life the way we used to would no longer be possible. People’s understanding of art was already quite low, and now there’s an additional tool to devalue it even more. But in the end, when you use AI at work every day, your attitude towards it becomes neutral. It is just it is. Ok.
So yeah, basically, I just explained in a long text why I included that AI-generated window in that picture. I don`t take money for the backgrounds, because it was possible to do it that way. Now, proper backgrounds will either be paid for or created by my friend GodotXD — as in our new YCH collab.
By the way, I have no problem with honest opinions about my questionable behavior.

Firstly, this piece is still amazing and its nice to see a full traditional rendering.
On that note though, people are very quick to witch hunt in regards to AI in -any- capacity. Granted its understandable as to -why- when its being wielded around so callously by many. It is a sensitive topic as its highly "Either with it or against it" with no apparent middle ground, with many feeling its not something that "can be discussed" as any form of 'leniency' or 'tolerance/acceptance' automatically lands you into the "with it" category I've noticed.
I feel that, if used -as- a tool and not -for replacement-, it can have its place if used appropriately. Not unlike when the automotive industry went from 'carburetors' to 'electronic fuel injection', granted this may not be the best example in every scenario.

I agree with your comment. It really is a complex topic, especially since many people are feeling the impact of shrinking job opportunities, and the value of creative labor is decreasing in areas where AI can now be applied. A skill you've spent your whole life developing — something you've poured your heart and soul into — is suddenly replaced by a machine that can do it in minutes.
That said, I personally use AI to help me write in English, because my original language skill isn’t that strong. I can speak and write well enough to be understood, but I wouldn’t have dared to start a complex conversation like this without AI assistance.
I also have friends who work as translators in different languages. One of them actually lived through the rise of Google Translate. When AI tools started gaining popularity, he told me that it felt very familiar — like history repeating itself — and back then, he really thought it was the end of his profession.
But now, years later, he’s still doing what he loves and practicing his craft.
Also, I wanted to say that I agree with your analogy — it’s a good one.
However, I have nothing against people who set rules against AI. In fact, I find that such views help me believe more and more in human empathy. Moreover, the rules on this site that prohibit AI actually do contribute to creating that old-school internet atmosphere — without algorithms, when everything felt simpler and clearer. So I honestly don’t mind doing a bit of extra work in order to share my art here.
Yes, it was a bit unpleasant to see my picture removed, since it forced me to make some adjustments to my to-do list. But in truth, that little window in the background is just a small amount of work.

That entire ordeal is a bit silly seeing how i've seen random uncredited images straight from google used as backgrounds in images on this site haha
My honest opinion is that this painting is beautiful and you're incredibly talented. I guess the positive from this is your new collaboration with your friend. 🙏

By the way, you brought up a very interesting point. I’d even call it somewhat hypocritical. Artists are actually some of the biggest offenders when it comes to taking photographers’ work. From using references and tracing to line work, paint overs, and—as you mentioned—using photos as backgrounds. Moreover, photos are easily used for memes, for aesthetics under music tracks, Pinterest vibes, and so on.
Thank you very much for the compliment. I’m also really happy with how this painting turned out and want to create even more work in this style of shading.

I will stand with the minority in this case, as I believe the use of AI should be disclaimed with the customer or listed as a cautionary detail in the artist's terms and conditions. I couldn't find any terms on conditions on your account, but if you have listed them, I'm sorry I missed them.
I don't think it's fair to place the same expectations around AI usage in game development, which is typically focused on reaching a broad demographic, to commissioned artworks, which are a much more personal and individual investment.
If I commissioned a sculptor to create a custom figurine of one of my characters, I would be disappointed if it turned out to be 3-D printed and it wasn't specified.
If I commissioned a blacksmith to forge a custom blade, I would be disappointed if it was machine-manufactured and it wasn't specified.
That doesn't make the manufactured items inherently negative, and it could very well be of higher quality than a human could produce, but that's not what I believed I was paying for, and to me a part of the artistry has been lost.
Much in the same way, if I hired an artist to create a piece featuring my character, I would be disappointed in the use of AI assistance in any capacity, if it wasn't clearly laid out to me. I take the stance of investing in and supporting artists to create something with their own honed talents and skills. Those skills take a long time to master, and it makes me very appreciative and humbled when those skills are used on something important to me.

Btw, I know that the use of AI in this case was on a small background element, but I personally still feel that the artistry and the possible appreciation to be found in any piece is reduced by image generation over hand-crafted work.
It's like how "100% handmade" things are a tag that add another level of significance to an item.
I don't condemn you for using AI.
This is only how I view art.
At the end of the day it is your gallery, your business, and you can choose what tools you want to use.
But I think a disclaimer of its use is important when paying customers seek you out based on your style and skill.

I hadn’t thought about commissions from that perspective. It’s an interesting way to look at the issue. Let’s put it this way — I used to think that clients cared more about the artist’s vision and style than the specific amount of time spent on the work. But now I’ll keep this point in mind too.
In this particular case, the client didn’t care whether AI was used or not, although I didn’t discuss it with them in advance — which is indeed my mistake. Honestly, I didn’t even consider that it could be a problem. I only realized it when FA removed my piece from the site. That’s also when I found out that AI use is banned here (I’ve been using this site since before AI existed at all). This was actually my first commission where I used AI. The situation became a learning experience for me.
Also, I wouldn’t really call your opinion that of a minority. I’m not a supporter of AI either. I absolutely don’t enjoy seeing the same-looking generated images filling up my Instagram feed. I just hadn’t thought about the aspects you mentioned above.
My point is that I don’t see a huge difference between artists using photos and artists using AI in a similar way. For example — I’m a character artist. Drawing backgrounds isn’t my strong suit. While I can draw characters without any references, when it comes to backgrounds, I sometimes need help.
It’s exactly because people have different goals and experiences that I find it so interesting to raise topics like this.
